Ah, Flemeth. The all-seeing, all-knowing shapeshifter voiced by none other than the indomitable 'Captain Janeway' Kate Mulgrew herself. A mystery wrapped within an enigma, a pivotal secondary character in three Dragon Age games, and - for Dragon Age: Origins alone - an optional boss fight.
Make no mistake, Flemeth packs a punch. Defeating her is one of Dragon Age: Origins' coolest moments, but figuring out how to do so isn't quite as fun by comparison. Here's everything we've learned in our bouts with the Witch of the Wilds.
As with most everything in Dragon Age, the path to fighting Flemeth comes courtesy of a quest. In this case, that quest is 'Flemeth's Real Grimoire', which happens to be Morrigan's companion quest.
Every companion in Dragon Age: Origins has one, and they tend to require elevating the character's approval rating.
The same holds true for Morrigan. You'll note she's growing friendlier, and even a bit genuinely open, toward your Warden as her approval rises. Giving Morrigan great gifts helps expedite the process, but in general, you'll want to:
This alone should get the ball rolling in good time. Other than that, just talk to Morrigan lots, because that's always a reliable way to build approval.
Once Morrigan's approval is high enough, speaking with her at camp will prompt her to request that you help her in retrieving the Black Grimoire stolen from her mother, Flemeth. (See, we're getting there, slowly but surely.) You'll find the Black Grimoire in the Circle Tower, Senior Mage Quarters, inside a chest in Irving's office.
It's entirely possible to obtain the Black Grimoire long before Morrigan's approval is elevated enough to prompt the quest. If this happens, the quest still triggers - you'll simply be able to hand the item to her then and there.
After Morrigan has acquired the Black Grimoire, leave camp and then return. She should be rather fiery, and for good reason, as you'll soon learn. Morrigan's desire to betray Flemeth over the contents of the Black Grimoire is precisely what we've needed in order to unlock the fight.
Be sure to agree to do this quest for Morrigan, or you're locked out of the quest forever.
As Morrigan advises, do not bring her with you upon your return to Flemeth's hut. The whole plan here hinges on her being safely away from her mother. Needless to say, this may lock you out of some great spells for the battle, unless your Warden is a mage of similar make. So it goes.
You're given the choice to negotiate with Flemeth, allowing her to flee. You still receive the same main rewards of Flemeth's Grimoire and Robes of Possession whether you fight her or not. For the purposes of this guide, we're assuming you intend to combat her.
Flemeth is classified as a High Dragon. The most effective way to ensure your survival is to equip fire-resistant gear on a tank who can withstand her barrage, drawing aggro via Taunt throughout the bout. Keeping the High Dragon distracted with your tank, move the rest of your party well out of range, off to the side of the battle zone.
Flemeth in dragon form.If your Warden is the tank, disregard this next bit. Otherwise, have them strike with long-range weapons (bows or magic) alongside the other party members being held in the back.
It's not a bad idea to take Wynne with you and control her yourself, as her aggro level is so low, Flemeth will virtually never attack her. Controlling usage of the Group Heal spell directly can save you from some nasty surprises.
This won't come as a shock, but the higher your level, the easier a time you'll have with Flemeth. In general, folks whose characters are level 16 and above tend to have it far easier, with around level 12-13 being the minimum we recommend for taking her on. That is not to say people haven't defeated her at even lower levels - they totally have - but it's a pain in the rear by comparison.
In fact, if you want to make things really easy, hold off on challenging Flemeth until you can get large fire resistant crystals for Shale or Superior Dragon Armor for higher fire resistance in Denerim.
Despite all her fire-breathing antics, Flemeth has no innate resistance to fire-type magic. This means magic of all kinds works on her, and she may even harm herself at times whilst attacking. All the more reason why primarily dealing damage from afar is the way to win!
