Everyone looks for the meaning of life at some point or another, and The Sims 4: Life & Death has made that easier than ever for our Sims to do with the addition of the Soul's Journey mechanic in the expansion pack. Make your Sim a bucket list and check things off to progress!

The Sims 4: Life & Death - Soul's Journey Guide

Your Soul's Journey for any given Sim begins with their bucket list in young adulthood, but it stretches into the great beyond with plenty of additional milestones for ghost Sims. It adds a wonderful depth to ghost Sims, and might even result in your Sim's rebirth.

How To Progress In The Soul's Journey

Bucket Lists And Aspirations, In Life And Death

When a Sim becomes a young adult as you play through their lifespan in The Sims 4, you'll gain access to another new feature from the Life & Death expansion: the bucket list, a vastly upgraded tracking of your Sim's various wants, aspirations, and goals. Your Sim will establish goals for themselves naturally as you play, which develop based on their interests and experiences, or you can choose them manually if there's something specific you'd like to do.

Either way, you obtain new goals for your Sim's bucket list, completing bucket list goals vastly boosts the Soul's Journey progress. They seem to grant the most progress toward the Soul's Journey, so be sure to set some goals out for your Sim. Sims who are Chased by Death can even create perfect goals, allowing you to choose any goal you'd like for them to add to their bucket list instead of vaguely selecting a category and hoping for the best.

That said, the bucket list goals aren't the only way to make progress in your Soul's Journey. As you complete other staple gameplay tasks, you'll notice a green meditative symbol near your Sim's aspiration, which denotes gaining points toward your Soul's Journey from whatever you just did.

You'll also receive points toward the next milestone from things like:

  • Completing milestones in your Sim's current aspiration, which is displayed below your Soul's Journey when playing with the Life & Death pack installed.
  • Completing various wants and whims, helping your Sim feel fulfilled in their daily life and paying out in Satisfaction Points you can use in the Rewards Store each time you finish one.

In all, the point of weaving together a Sim's aspirations, wants, whims, and goals is making a Sim's life feel fuller and more complete, especially since you'll earn a number of different perks as you continue to make progress in the Soul's Journey. That said, since playing as ghost Sims is a big feature of the expansion pack, don't expect the Soul's Journey to end when their life does!

Sims who have the Chased by Death trait included in the Life & Death expansion pack are more prone to progress on their Soul's Journey, earning noticeably more points for each instance of progress and speeding through their progress far quicker than normal Sims. It comes with risks, though, so weigh up the pros and cons when creating your Chased by Death Sims.

While your Sim maintains their bucket list during their life, anything leftover once their time comes is referred to as Unfinished Business for ghost Sims. Your bucket list will expand to include ghastly powers, but completing goals is still pivotal to progressing in the Soul's Journey.

With six milestones available during a Sim's life and the final milestones limited to ghost Sims, you'll find nine total levels of the Soul's Journey including where you begin at zero on first starting a new Sim's life. The Soul's Journey panel changes to a nebulous purple and the soul icon lights up, signifying that your Sim is ready for the ghostly portions of their Soul's Journey. Keep finishing your goals to keep plugging away at your Soul's Journey!

What Happens When You Complete Your Soul's Journey?

The Sims 4: Life & Death - Soul's Journey Guide

To complete a Sim's Soul's Journey, you'll need to continue playing your Sim after death. They can be added to your family like normal Sims by choosing to do so at the moment of their death, instead of allowing them to roam as a free-range ghost throughout the world, Bound only to their urn or tombstone. This is how ghosts function in the base game for The Sims 4.

But if you'd like to push on as a ghost Sim, you'll have extra levels of the Soul's Journey after death, limited exclusively to ghost Sims! These make alterations to your growing list of powers as you increase your Ghost Mastery, the ability tree for occult life stage Sims especially for ghosts in the Life & Death expansion.

After completing these additional milestones on the Soul's Journey after death, your Sim will have a variety of perks available to them for hitting the final milestone, The Big Picture. These perks are:

  • Having extra stamina to use when practicing their Ghost Mastery, vastly improving your Sim's capability for ghostly powers.
  • The Burning Soul trait, which can help add flavor to your Sim's next life if they choose to be reborn, allowing them to recall a trait they had in their previous life.

The ability to recall your Sim's previous traits even extends to reward traits they may have earned throughout their previous life, allowing you to pass forward some pretty powerful traits for your new child Sims. Additionally, if you choose to reincarnate as a younger Sim than you died as, you'll carry forward some young Sim skills as well.

While Rebirth is possible anytime after reaching the "Dreams Fulfilled" milestone in the Soul's Journey, there are still a few milestones left to complete in the Soul's Journey before recalling previous traits. This is reserved only for Sims who have maxed out the entire Soul's Journey gauge.
