px vs. em in CSS: When Should I Use Each Unit?

Why Use em Instead of px in CSS Stylesheets?

Despite being advised to use "em" over "px" in stylesheets, there's no inherent superiority between them. Both serve distinct purposes, and neither is unequivocally better.

Defining the Units:

  • px: An absolute unit representing a fixed size (such as 1 inch's 96th part). It doesn't scale with the browser window or font size.
  • em: A relative unit proportional to the current font size. This means it scales as the font size changes.

Choosing the Appropriate Unit:

Use px when:

  • Precision is crucial, such as for font sizes or border widths.
  • Fixed-sized elements are necessary for design, such as logos or icons.
  • Working with images, as they typically default to 1px per pixel.
  • High or low screen density or browser zoom would impact absolute measurements.

Use em when:

  • Size needs to depend on the font size, such as for text indents or margins.

Example:

Consider a scenario where a paragraph's font size is 16px. Using "em" to define the paragraph's margins as "1em" would ensure that the margins are 16px wide. If the font size is subsequently changed to 20px, the margins would automatically become 20px, maintaining consistency with the font size.

While neither "px" nor "em" is universally superior, understanding their respective characteristics allows for informed choices that optimize design outcomes.
