How Can I Create a Transparent Background Image with CSS?

Overlaying Transparent Images for Backgrounds

In web design, adding images as backgrounds enhances aesthetic appeal. However, sometimes images may be too bright or need transparency adjustments. Can you combine background images and opacity in a single CSS property?

Despite references that explain image transparency and background image settings separately, it is possible to combine them to create a transparent background image.

Consider the following example:

#main {
    background-image: url(/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/tandem.jpg);
}

This code sets the image at the specified URL as the background for the element with the ID "main." However, this doesn't allow for opacity adjustments.

To achieve a transparent background image, use the following CSS:

#main {
    position: relative;
}
#main:after {
    content : "";
    display: block;
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    left: 0;
    background-image: url(/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/tandem.jpg);
    width: 100%;
    height: 100%;
    opacity : 0.2;
    z-index: -1;
}

In this code:

  1. position: relative is added to the parent element (#main) to allow for absolute positioning of the following pseudo-element.
  2. A pseudo-element (#main:after) is created to overlay the background image.
  3. The content property is set to an empty string to prevent any text or content from appearing inside the pseudo-element.
  4. The pseudo-element is given absolute positioning with position: absolute, allowing it to overlay the parent element.
  5. The background-image property is set to the same URL as the #main element's background-image, resulting in the image overlaying the parent element.
  6. opacity : 0.2 sets the transparency level to 20%. Adjusting this value changes the image's opacity.
  7. z-index: -1 ensures the pseudo-element is positioned behind the parent element's content.

Using this method, you can set a background image and control its opacity, enabling you to create visually appealing designs with transparent imagery that doesn't overpower the content.

mPDF

mPDF is a PHP library that can generate PDF files from UTF-8 encoded HTML. The original author, Ian Back, wrote mPDF to output PDF files "on the fly" from his website and handle different languages. It is slower than original scripts like HTML2FPDF and produces larger files when using Unicode fonts, but supports CSS styles etc. and has a lot of enhancements. Supports almost all languages, including RTL (Arabic and Hebrew) and CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Supports nested block-level elements (such as P, DIV),
