Problem: How to span a grid item from the first to the last row or column in an implicit grid, where the number of rows/columns is unknown?
Background:
Implicit grids are grids with multiple tracks that are generated automatically based on the content within them. Without explicit grid definitions, it becomes challenging to determine the number of rows/columns present.
Current Limitations:
Unfortunately, within the current CSS Grid spec, it's not possible to span grid items across all rows/columns in an implicit grid using Grid properties alone.
Alternatives:
Solution for Explicit Grids:
While spanning items cannot be achieved in implicit grids, it's possible to accomplish it in explicit grids.
Understanding Negative Integers:
The CSS Grid specification allows the use of negative integers in grid-placement properties. Positive integers count from the start, while negative integers count from the end.
Spanning Grid Item:
To span a grid item from the first column to the last in an explicit grid, use:
grid-column: 1 / -1;
This indicates that the grid item should start at the first column line and end at the last column line. The same concept applies for spanning rows.
Note:
This method only works when the grid is explicitly defined using grid-template-properties (rows, columns, and areas).
