Ellipsis Not Appearing in CSS? Check These Requirements
In CSS, text-overflow: ellipsis; is a useful property for truncating long text and adding ellipsis (...) when space is limited. However, if this property is not working as expected, there may be underlying issues.
Conditions for Ellipsis to Work:
text-overflow: ellipsis; operates effectively only when specific conditions are met:
- Constrained Width: The element's width must be constrained in pixels (px). Using percentage (%) for width will not trigger ellipsis.
- Overflow: The element's overflow style must be set to hidden.
- Whitespace Management: The element's white-space property must be set to nowrap.
Potential Issue:
If text-overflow: ellipsis; is not working, the most likely issue is that the element's width is not properly constrained. By default, elements with display: inline ignore width settings.
Solutions:
To resolve the issue, you can modify the element's style in the following ways:
- Display: Change display: inline to display: inline-block or display: block.
- Constraining Container: Add a container element with a fixed width or maximum width and set the element's display to block.
- Floats: Set the element to float: left or float: right.
Example with Inline-Block Display:
To illustrate, here's a revised code snippet with the display: inline-block property added:
.app a { display: inline-block; }
By constraining the element's width explicitly, the ellipsis effect should now work as intended.
