How Can I Prevent Text Overflow from Expanding HTML Table Column Widths?

Control Table Column Width Despite Text Overflow

Numerous developers face the issue of column width expanding in HTML tables when dealing with overflowing text cells. To address this issue, it's crucial to maintain a consistent column width regardless of cell content length.

To overcome this challenge, the following approach is recommended:

  1. Specify Column Width: Use CSS to specify the desired width for each column cell using the "width" property.
  2. Fix Table Layout: Set the "table-layout" property to "fixed" for the table. This prevents individual cells from overriding the specified widths.
  3. Disable Cell Expansion: Set the "overflow" property to "hidden" for both header ("th") and data ("td") cells. This ensures that any excess text remains within the cell instead of pushing the column width.

Here's an example of the CSS code that incorporates these recommendations:

table {
  border: 1px solid black;
  table-layout: fixed;
  width: 200px;
}

th,
td {
  border: 1px solid black;
  width: 100px;
  overflow: hidden;
}

With these settings, the column widths remain fixed at 100px, even when text cells contain excessive content. You can further enhance the appearance by adjusting borders and sizes through CSS.
