Why Doesn't My Absolutely Positioned Div Stay Within Its Parent Container?

Absolute Position Issue Resolved

In an attempt to absolutely position a div within its parent container, it was found that the div remained stuck at the top left corner of the page. The code used for this positioning is as follows:

The expectation was for the div with id "absPos" to be positioned within the parent div, however, the actual behavior was for it to be placed at the top left of the page.

Cause and Solution

The reason for this behavior lies in the concept of the offset parent. Elements with absolute positioning derive their position relative to their offset parent, which is the nearest ancestor that is also positioned. In the provided code, none of the ancestors of the "absPos" div were positioned elements, causing it to be offset from the body element.

To resolve this issue, it is necessary to set the position of the parent div to "relative," using the following code:

By applying the "relative" position to the parent div, it becomes a positioned element and thus serves as the offset parent for the "absPos" div. This solves the issue and allows for the absolute positioning of the "absPos" div relative to its parent.
