One of the greatest joys in Dragon Quest 3 Remake is the freedom the game affords you. With limited restrictions, you can head off in just about any direction, build your party however you want, and also happen upon some rather optional content.
One such location you can happen upon is the village of Mur, a snowy, isolated locale far apart from any other civilization. Nothing really leads you here other than your own exploration, but it turns out this little hamlet has more than a few personal aspects for your Hero as well.
At a certain point in the story, the King of Portoga will request you gather up some Black Pepper for him in the town of Baharata, and will open up Nordy's Grotto for you to reach it. From this point, you are free to continue directly on to Mur. It will be quite the journey though.
Mur is located on the north-eastern tip of the eastern continent. This places it to the north-east of Alltrades Abbey, which itself is to the north-east of Baharata. It appears by the coast, and can be seen on the world map from where the forest touches the Tundra.
When you first enter Mur, there won't be too much for you to see or do, though make sure to rest at the inn and save at the church before going any further.
You can also choose to sail the coast to reach Mur after getting your own ship from the King of Portoga, if you don't mind waiting a bit. An old man will even joke that you could not have possibly come to Mur by walking.
Once you enter Mur, take a good look around. You might notice in one of the shops, there is a rather eye-catching blue helmet on display, horns and all. You cannot pick this up now though, and if you ask the shopkeeper he will say that it is being kept for someone who forgot it.
You can ultimately get this helmet, though you have to activate a lengthy series of events first. For now, leave the village of Mur and explore the tundra for a bit.
After some time has passed, return to Mur for a cutscene to activate. An old man will approach you, mistaking you for 'Peredvizhnik', the title they gave to someone who saved their village in the past. After a brief flashback, the chain of events that let you acquire that mysterious helmet are set in motion.
If the cutscene does not activate when you re-enter Mur, make sure to enter from the western entrance and that you have previously talked with the inhabitants.
After having seen this flashback, you won't be given any specific guidance. However, they will mention that the child, Petya, was saved by Peredvizhnik, and has had something of an obsession with his saviour in the years since. So logically, you should seek out Petya first.
If you explored the town thoroughly enough your first time through, you may remember where Petya lives. However, he's not actually at home during the day, which his mother will inform you of if you go there. Instead, she tells you that he is at the store, on the second floor.
While Petya is at home during the night, he is sleeping, which makes it quite hard to ask him any questions.
Head to the shop, entering through the side door by the docks. Talk with the shopkeeper first to get a little more backstory on Peredvizhnik before heading upstairs to Petya. Talk with him, and he will tell you the full story of his saviour, how he saved the town even in a state of ill health. The town kept his helmet in great repair in hopes of his eventual return. But he never did.
You can head back downstairs now, where the shopkeeper will stop you. He overheard your conversation with Petya, and that you also came from Aliahan, the same home as Peredvizhnik. Their saviour had a wife and child, he recalls, who must be somewhere around your age. Feeling that you would have a much greater chance of returning the helmet, he entrusts it to you.
Picking up the helmet, you notice a message inside it. 'May victory smile upon you, Great Hero of Aliahan'. While the quest was not exactly subtle, this confirms to your hero that Mur's Peredvizhnik is your very own father, Ortega.
And now you can don his helmet as an actual piece of armour. If you picked it up early, it's pretty helpful for the next while. With that, the brief quest of Mur is now complete.
However, the story of Ortega's helmet is not yet finished. While the game does not explicitly prompt you to do so, you should probably return home. After all, many people are of the opinion that Ortega is still out there somewhere, fighting. They would be pleased to hear about his good deeds from far afield.
To this end, return to Aliahan and go visit your mother. She will treat you to another flashback, showing Ortega's friends gifting the helmet to him. They created it to help him along his journey, and as a token for the village's support of his mission.
There's no additional reward for this, though the small amount of closure is good for both your Hero and their mother. The mystery of Ortega's helmet is now solved.
