What's more exciting than seeing a bright red treasure chest, opening it up, and getting a brand-new piece of gear that is way more powerful than what you have equipped. It's an amazing feeling, especially when you see the absurd bonuses on the weapon. Equip it and show off just how strong it can be.
Ah, but it just so happens to be cursed. Dragon Quest 3 Remake has lots of gear like that, from weapons to accessories, that have a risk-reward factor involved. Sometimes it's worth taking a chance, while others the trade-off might be more than you bargained for. So how do you actually deal with a cure?
Curses are, simply put, negative effects that are inherent to a piece of gear. These curses can be found on every piece of gear you equip. Weapons, armour, accessories, you name it. If you can use it, it can be cursed.
Plenty of the early game pieces of equipment are kind enough to tell you when a weapon is cursed, though this isn't true of every weapon. If a weapon ever seems too good to be true, then it probably is. An item called "The Sword of Ruin" is a weapon you should know its cursed even if it doesn't say so.
Well fine, just take it off if it's no good. Well, that's where you're out of luck. Cursed equipment becomes quite keen on its user, staying attached to them no matter what. There are a few ways to remove these cursed items, though they're not easy or cheap, so think real hard about each item you equip.
Curses can range from something as simple as damaging you when you strike an enemy, to putting you in a state of permanent confusion. There's no real way of knowing what a curse does until you see it for yourself. Trial by fire.
If only it were that easy, but sadly it is not. If a piece of equipment comes with a curse, that's permanent. While you can remove the curse from the character, you can't remove the curse from the item. If you want the extra power it offers you, you'll have to put up with an inconvenient curse.
If you're not sure if a piece of equipment is cursed, a Merchant can tell you in short order. Simply show them any piece of equipment, and they'll tell you if its cursed, as well as its sale value, rarity, and if it's gender-locked.
Your Merchant has this as an inherent ability, rather than one they learn from leveling up.
Thankfully, curses aren't permanent, though they're something you'll want to avoid in the early game unless you're rolling in gold. There are only two ways of removing a curse, which removes the item in question from the cursed character, returning it to the Item Bag instead.
The first is to head to any Church or Priest who offers the services of the Church, and choose Benediction. This will, one at a time, remove cursed equipment from your characters. It is also a pretty steep cost to use the Goddess' services, potentially costing upwards of 1,000 Gold to remove it. The Church sure does make a mint off curses, huh.
The second, and preferable, way is to use the Sheen spell. It really is that simple. However, this spell doesn't unlock until quite a bit along either the Mage or Sage Job, around level 30. It also takes around 20 MP to use. Thankfully, sleeping at an inn to refill your MP is much more affordable than Benediction.
So if you want to try your hand at cursed equipment, make sure to have a magic-user handy with the Sheen spell, unless you plan on donating all of your livfe's savings to the Church.
