For your ultimate confrontation against Louis, you're given thirty days to prepare. Among the many tasks you can tackle during those final moments of Metaphor: ReFantazio are the Trial of the Dragon quests, which will be invaluable when the moment of reckoning arrives.
The Bygone Legacy quest is one of these trials that has you returning to the Tower of Insolence to face an aptly named dragon boss, the Devourer of Stars. It's a tough fight, and the name alone is chill-inducing, but with the right strategy and some patience, you can take this formidable foe down.
To start the Bygone Legacy, visit the Upper Blue Sky Bridge in Altabury Heights and speak to the Enraged Mustari with the quest marker. The NPC will reveal the existence of a forbidden power within the Tower of Insolence, reserved for those who prove themselves worthy.
If you previously ventured into the dungeon during the Proof of Power quest, you'll find it largely unchanged on your return, except now it's crawling with stronger foes, and a challenging dragon boss awaits at the summit.
While you can tackle the Trials in any order, it's wise to save Bygone Legacy for later, as the boss at the dungeon's summit is no joke. Before setting out, ensure you're level 65 or above and take the time to improve your Follower Bonds, as some grant helpful passive abilities in dungeons.
Catherina, in particular, becomes a helpful asset during boss battles when she reaches Rank 7, as she’ll assist you with 5,000 damage at the start of the fight.
After battling your way through the mobs and climbing the Tower of Insolence, you'll face the level 70 Devourer of Stars at the top. Make sure to save at Plato's Mirage before the encounter and make any last-minute adjustments to your party composition.
The Devourer of Stars is immune to and repels all forms of damage except for Almighty, which is your primary means of dealing damage against this boss. However, certain Archetype skills and Synthesis attacks can temporarily override this resistance, and even apply a one-time weakness, giving you an additional way to chip away at its health.

Protagonist | Prince | Front | The Protagonist's primary duty will be party-wide healing with Medicall and curing ailments using Pen Patra inherited. However, with Royal Slash, he'll also take the backseat as the secondary damage dealer.
Hulkenberg | Paladin or Royal Knight | Front | No other character can fit the role of a tank better than Hulkenberg, and for that reason, it's advisable to take her innate Paladin, or if unlocked, the Royal Knight Archetype for her.
Heimsay | Ninja or Royal Thief | Front | With the agility of the Thief lineage, Heimsay can dodge most of the boss’s attacks. If unlocked and maxed out, the Royal Thief Archetype will let him drain all turn icons from the boss with one dodge.
Strohl | Tycoon | Front | Strohl's focus should be on dealing Almighty damage with the Gold Rush ability, supported by passive skills like Front Boost and Heat Up. |
Start by using Heimsay’s Vidyartha skill to put a debuff on the boss and Hulkenberg’s Formation of Vigor to boost your damage output. This sets up Strohl and the Protagonist to deal maximum damage to the boss; Strohl's Gold Rush ability also has a high crit rate, so reset the battle until you land one for an all-important extra Turn Icon in the first round.
The protagonist's Emerald Vortex can also damage the boss, as it ignores the boss's repel.
When the boss takes its turn, it will immediately cast Miasma Whorl, capping party HP at 300 for the rest of the fight while wasting its remaining turns to nullify your buffs and stack its own. That’s round one done without taking damage!
As the cycle repeats, on the Protagonist's turn, use the Hero's Cry ability this time. It's a one-time-per-battle move that grants <script> window.adsNinja = window.adsNinja || {}; window.adsNinja.queue = window.adsNinja.queue || []; window.adsNinja.queue.push(function(){ window.adsNinja.queue.push(function(){ var fallbackContent = ` <video> <source src='https://video.thegamerimages.com/2024/11/metaphor_-refantazio-2024-11-18-22-25-52-1731984383.mp4' type='video/mp4'> Your browser does not support the video tag. `; try{ var result = window.adsNinja.monetizeVideo('.emaki-video-player-08aa82801d524706', JSON.parse(`{\"name\":\"Instream-InContent\",\"groupName\":\"content\"}`), JSON.parse(`{\"trackingId\":\"in-content\",\"playlist\":[{\"title\":\"Metaphor: ReFantazio - How To Beat the Devourer Of Stars\",\"description\":\"\",\"length\":\"4:04\",\"mimeType\":\"video\/mp4\",\"url\":\"https:\/\/video.thegamerimages.com\/2024\/11\/metaphor_-refantazio-2024-11-18-22-25-52-1731984383.mp4\",\"thumbnailLink\":\"https:\/\/static1.thegamerimages.com\/wordpress\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/wm\/2024\/11\/battle-rewards-for-beating-the-devourer-of-stars-in-metaphor-refantazio.jpg?fit=crop&w=1024&h=576\",\"textTracks\":[{\"kind\":\"subtitles\",\"label\":\"English\",\"language\":\"en\",\"url\":\"https:\/\/video.thegamerimages.com\/2024\/11\/metaphor_-refantazio-2024-11-18-22-25-52-1731984383-1731984855.vtt\",\"default\":false}]}]}`)); if(!result){ console.warn('Failed to load AdsNinja video player.'); document.getElementById('emaki-video-player-08aa82801d524706').innerHTML = fallbackContent; } } catch(error){ console.warn('Failed to load AdsNinja video player.'); document.getElementById('emaki-video-player-08aa82801d524706').innerHTML = fallbackContent; } }); }); </script>extra turn icons, giving you a total of seven to work with. Use them to reapply your buffs, re-cast Vidyartha, and use Dekaja to remove the boss’s buffs.
While also using skills to damage the boss, make sure to set up Hulkenberg's Omni-Guard and Heismay's Quick Change Arts in preparation for what's to come next.
By then, the boss will already be around half HP or lower, at which point it will unleash the Great Dragon’s Shriek ability to gain eight turn icons. Your preparation will most certainly pay off here, as Omni-Guard and Quick Change Arts will help drain the boss's turn icons by nullifying its attacks to soften the onslaught.
Once you've weathered this storm, keep cycling buffs and debuffs; the boss will spend its turns undoing your setup, so stay persistent. With this strategy, you likely won’t need much healing before landing the final blow and claiming victory.
Beating the Devourer of Stars nets you some XP, A-XP, Mag, and Reeve, but those are just appetizers. The real prize is the Cardinal Dragon Raiment, your well-earned reward for conquering the Bygone Legacy trial. This armor comes packed with a 5 boost to both Magic and Strength and grants immunity against Fire attacks.
