As soon as one of your professions in Brighter Shores hits level 20, you'll gain access to the Knowledge Points system. With Knowledge Points, you can essentially make a fairly grindy game a bit less so, either by engaging in passive EXP that continues after you log out, by giving direct EXP boosts to one of your professions, or by converting the point into silver.
Some of these choices are better than others, and having a fundamental grasp of the way in which Knowledge Points operate can help you to make informed decisions that will speed you through menus on your road to mastery of Brighter Shores' vibrant world.
What Are Knowledge Points In Brighter Shores?
Knowledge Points are not unlocked until you reach level 20 in a profession for the first time, so you needn't concern yourself with them throughout your earliest hours roaming Hopeport in Brighter Shores.
Once you hit that point - for us, it was with the Guard profession - a pop-up introduces the system. But the in-game explanation can be a bit vague, so here's how it works: as you use profession-specific actions, your Knowledge Point percentage bar steadily rises.
At 100 percent, a single Knowledge Point is gained. You have three primary choices as to what to spend it on.
Passive Activities
You can elect to unlock a Passive EXP source from a specific monster or gathering task. Your professions must reach minimum levels for each available task - a level 20 Guard can engage in the Passive EXP system for Street Lice, for instance.
A Fisher can spend time fishing for particular species as outlined by the Knowledge Point's unlock, while a Forager will tap into the same mechanic, albeit for particular sources of foraging. Easy enough.
The nice thing about Passive EXP is that you can log out of the game after starting up the specified task, and you'll continue to gain EXP until you log back in.
Well, not quite - it's a bit more complicated. Gathering classes require a tool for offline EXP-gaining. These tools eventually fill up to the point that no more Passive EXP can be earned before logging back in, though it takes several hours.
Convert To EXP
You can also gain a lump sum of EXP for any profession that's at least level 20. Which is to say, if you gain a Knowledge Point while grinding as one 20 profession, you can actually use that point for a different profession.
This is an excellent way to build levels in professions you're not quite as enamored with, or professions that just happen to be at a much lower level. If I gain a Knowledge Point as a level 40 Guard, I can get a chunk of EXP to raise my level 21 Chef, and so forth.
Convert To Silver
Lastly, you can choose to transform the Knowledge Point into silver. At least at the early-to-mid profession levels, the payout is kind of awful, so we'd advise against this path.
This is a common complaint among Early Access players, so the payout may increase in future updates to Brighter Shores. But then, since this is Early Access, bear in mind that everything we cover could change in time!
What Should You Spend Your Knowledge Points On?
To a degree, it's up to personal taste, of course. But in our travels through Brighter Shores, we've kind of reached a consensus that the instant EXP is the savviest choice overall.
Mind you, even the instant EXP offerings aren't great. But since you gain Knowledge Points at a reasonably steady clip, this is more or less mitigated by the relative rapidity of them. Some actions garner multiple percentage points at once, even.
You should probably go ahead and unlock one Passive Action per profession, just so you're getting a bit while you're logged out. But frankly, Passive EXP is dismal - at least, in Brighter Shores' earliest early-access days.
