Lego Horizon Adventures lets you switch characters, though not quite to the extent of the Lego games you know. There aren’t countless to choose from, each with abilities that you’ll need to switch to in order to utilise. Instead, there is a limited amount of character here, which works as a loose ‘class-based’ system, but also not really...

Each has advantages and disadvantages, so here’s everything you need to know about who to play as in Lego Horizon Adventures.

How Many Playable Characters Are There In Lego Horizon Adventures?

There are a total of four characters you can unlock and play as in Lego Horizon Adventures, which, admittedly, is much less than the classic Lego games we remember.

You’ll start off as Aloy, and as you complete the first few chapters of the game, you’ll unlock Varl, Teersa, and Erend, having the total roster by the time you enter Chapter 3.

How To Switch Characters In Lego Horizon Adventures

To switch between these characters, you'll need to decide while in the hub town of Mother's Heart - where you can interact with them to switch - or at the start of a level, where each character will be present to give you the choice before you proceed.

You cannot switch characters mid-level, so make sure you and your co-op partner are certain of your choices before setting off. If you're on harder difficulties, you'll really want to make sure you've got the best for the job.

Aloy: The Classic Archer

Aloy, as you may have safely guessed, uses her trusty bow to get her through every tricky situation. Whether it be in combat or the environment, she can shoot from a range, holding to charge up the shot for a longer, more powerful arrow trajectory.

She doesn’t, however, have her melee spear from the series; she’s purely a ranged fighter, with weapon abilities such as flaming arrows, freeze arrows, and scattershot. All of these characters are pretty accessible to play as, but Aloy will be your most familiar, especially as the starting point of the game.

Varl: Coward With A Spear

Okay, so the coward part is mainly just in his personality in Lego Horizon Adventures, but Varl’s combat abilities hold up well. Another ranged-centric character, Varl throws spears at enemies in order to deal critical damage.

These can be thrown at a quick rate, and charged similar to Aloy’s arrows in order to do more damage. The spears can also pierce enemies and hit enemies behind them, making for a more versatile approach.

Teersa: Basket Of Bombs

Are you expecting a third ranged-centric character? Because here’s Teersa, a ranged-centric character. Instead of a bow or spear, however, Teersa will throw items from her basket, whether it be bananas or chickens, and yes - they will all explode on impact.

These can be charged up and aimed with a throwing arc, which can take a bit more time to line up, but the explosives can be even more devastating. Though still accessible, it’s one of the trickier characters, but if you just want to throw stuff and watch the world go boom, then this violent old lady is for you.

Erend: Hammer? Hammer.

Finally, you’ll unlock Erend, who is actually not ranged-centric. Isn’t that nice?

Erend will use his hammer to swing at enemies, with a charged attack that lets him dash forwards and take a powerful swing. It’s the most drastic shift in playstyle of the bunch, but it is a much-needed shake-up to throw in.

I personally much preferred Erend’s playstyle, as it really felt different to the others. That hammer saw me through the rest of the game.

The hammer’s weapon abilities include the classics like fire and ice versions, but also earthquake hammers - which, yes, cause earthquakes to damage enemies in the surrounding area - and giant hammers, which will pick up and add blocks knocked off machines, making for a much more impressive and much more dangerous swing. If you’re looking to hack and… bash, then this is a solid choice.
