How to fix Font Awesome 404 errors in JSF when using Webjars?

Accessing Font Awesome Resources in JSF using Webjars

Issue:

When attempting to include Font Awesome icons in a JSF application using the pre-built webjars JAR, font resources are not being found. Despite the CSS file being accessible, subsequent requests for font files result in 404 errors.

Solution:

To ensure proper mapping and resolution of font resources, follow these steps:

  1. Use JSF Resource URL:

    Modify the CSS file references to use #{resource}. This will instruct JSF to generate the correct resource URL, including the proper JSF library mapping:

    src: url("#{resource['webjars:font-awesome/3.2.1/font/fontawesome-webfont.eot']}&v=3.2.1");
  2. Install OmniFaces:

    Add the OmniFaces dependency to your pom.xml:

    <dependency>
        <groupid>org.omnifaces</groupid>
        <artifactid>omnifaces</artifactid>
        <version><!-- Check omnifaces.org for current version. --></version>
    </dependency>
  3. Register UnmappedResourceHandler:

    In faces-config.xml, register the OmniFaces UnmappedResourceHandler:

    <application>
        <resource-handler>org.omnifaces.resourcehandler.UnmappedResourceHandler</resource-handler>
    </application>
  4. Update Servlet Mapping:

    In web.xml, include /javax.faces.resource/* in your FacesServlet mapping:

    <servlet-mapping>
        <servlet-name>facesServlet</servlet-name>
        <url-pattern>/javax.faces.resource/*</url-pattern>
        <url-pattern>*.xhtml</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
  5. Move Library Name:

    In your h:outputStylesheet tag, move the library name into the resource name:

    <outputstylesheet name="webjars/font-awesome/3.2.1/css/font-awesome.css"></outputstylesheet>

By implementing these steps, you can effectively access Font Awesome resources within your JSF application using the webjars JAR, ensuring the proper resolution of font files.

mPDF

mPDF is a PHP library that can generate PDF files from UTF-8 encoded HTML. The original author, Ian Back, wrote mPDF to output PDF files "on the fly" from his website and handle different languages. It is slower than original scripts like HTML2FPDF and produces larger files when using Unicode fonts, but supports CSS styles etc. and has a lot of enhancements. Supports almost all languages, including RTL (Arabic and Hebrew) and CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Supports nested block-level elements (such as P, DIV),
