OpenAI Vice President (VP) of Research and Safety Lilian Weng announced her resignation on Friday, following a wave of departures among the company’s AI safety personnel.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Weng stated that she will be leaving OpenAI after seven years. Joining the company in 2018, she played a key role in establishing OpenAI’s safety systems, a crucial aspect of the company’s responsible AI strategy.

“When I joined OpenAI in 2018, I was excited to work on robotics, and we had a small but mighty team,” wrote Weng. “We programmed a robotic hand to solve a Rubik’s cube, and a swarm of drones to fly through a forest.”

Her departure follows the recent resignations of several members of OpenAI’s AI safety team, including Jan Leike and Ilya Sutskever, who co-led the Superalignment team. The team was tasked with managing superintelligent AI, and their departures have raised concerns about the company’s commitment to AI safety.

In her post, Weng expressed gratitude for her time at OpenAI and pride in the Safety Systems team's growth and achievements.

“I’m so proud of everything the Safety Systems team has accomplished together, and I know they will continue to do amazing things,” she added.
