Rare 680-year-old coin found in study to be sold at auction

The rare 680-year-old coin is being sold by Charterhouse Auctioneers in Sherborne, on Thursday, November 28.

A rare 680-year-old gold coin, discovered in a late owner's study, is now set to go under the hammer at a Dorset auction house.

Minted during the reign of King Edward III, the Noble coin is being sold by Charterhouse Auctioneers in Sherborne on Thursday, November 28.

The coin was found by the widow of the late owner in his study as she was having a sort out and a tidy up.

After finding the coin and various other items, she contacted Charterhouse to request a home visit for help and advice.

The Noble was the first English coin produced in numbers. It was valued at a not inconsiderable six shillings and eight pence, which was roughly 80p or a third of a pound in today's money.

Today, they are rare to find, sought after and highly prized by collectors.

Charterhouse specialist coin, medal, militaria and stamp auction is at their Sherborne salerooms on November 28.
