Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake has announced his resignation from his advisory role at Eigen Foundation, effective since September.

The news was shared by Drake on November 2, 2024, via a post on the Ethereum Magicians forum. According to Drake, his decision to step down was driven by a desire to concentrate fully on advancing Ethereum's layer-1 protocol.

"I am resigning from my advisory role at Eigen Foundation, which I held since September," wrote Drake in the announcement. "This is to allow me to focus fully on advancing the Ethereum layer-1 protocol. Thanks to everyone at Eigen for having me!"

Drake's association with Eigen Foundation began in May 2024, when he accepted an advisory position to contribute his expertise to EigenLayer, a protocol enabling users to restake their Ether (ETH) to secure additional networks. This role included a significant incentive package in the form of EIGEN tokens, vesting over three years.

Upon accepting the advisory role, Drake transparently disclosed his involvement and compensation to the Ethereum community. He also emphasized his intention to reinvest any proceeds from this role back into the Ethereum ecosystem, either as investments or donations, to mitigate potential conflicts of interest.

"I am taking this role because I believe EigenLayer is a promising project and I want to help them identify and mitigate the risks involved in recursive staking," stated Drake in his May announcement.

"I am disclosing this role in advance because I believe in transparency and want to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. Any proceeds from this role will be reinvested into the Ethereum ecosystem."

Drake's involvement with Eigen Foundation sparked discussions within the Ethereum community regarding potential conflicts of interest. Members of the community expressed concerns about Ethereum Foundation members accepting substantial compensation from projects that might have conflicting incentives with Ethereum's core objectives.

In response to these concerns, Drake clarified that his advisory role was focused solely on researching restaking risks and that he maintained a critical stance towards EigenLayer to ensure alignment with Ethereum's interests.

"My role in Eigen is *only* to advise on the risks of recursive restaking. I am able to maintain a critical stance towards EigenLayer to advance what’s best for Ethereum. This is reflected in my writings on the matter, which I encourage you all to read," wrote Drake in a follow-up post.

"I am *not* advising on EigenLayer design, roadmap, fundraising, marketing, community management, etc. I am able to maintain an adversarial stance towards EigenLayer, which I believe is critical for my role in the Ethereum Foundation."

Drake's decision to resign from his advisory position at Eigen Foundation and refocus on Ethereum's core development was met with support from the community. Many expressed their appreciation for his contributions to both EigenLayer and Ethereum.

"This is great news, Justin. I am sure the Eigen team will miss your input, but I am also sure that they understand and support your decision," commented EigenLayer Labs co-founder Ben Edgington.

"We are grateful for your continued engagement with EigenLayer and the recursive restaking designs. Thank you for continuing to help us advance the state of the art in decentralized security!"

As Ethereum continues to progress, the roles and responsibilities of key contributors are a subject of ongoing dialogue within the blockchain community. This includes discussions on the importance of maintaining decentralized decision-making, encouraging diverse perspectives, and ensuring alignment with the network's core values.
