The 19th-ranked Ole Miss football team kept its foot on the gas and its playoff hopes alive Saturday with a blowout road victory worthy of postseason consideration.
No. 19 Ole Miss kept its College Football Playoff hopes alive with a 63-31 road victory over Arkansas on Saturday at Reynolds Razorback Stadium.
Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart passed for 515 yards and 6 touchdowns to lead the Rebels (7-2, 3-2 SEC) to their first victory in Fayetteville since 2008. It was also the first road victory in the series for the road team since Ole Miss' 2018 victory at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.
Arkansas (5-4, 3-3) suffered its most lopsided loss in the 116-year history of the series, which has been played 70 times.
Dart threw touchdown passes of 62, 66 and 3 yards to Jordan Watkins in the second quarter to build a 35-10 halftime lead. Dart also found Watkins for touchdowns of 11 and 62 yards in the third quarter, the last of which gave the Rebels a 56-17 lead.
Watkins, a senior, had a career day with 8 catches on 9 targets for 254 yards and 5 touchdowns. It was Watkins' fifth career 100-yard receiving game, but first since a game against LSU last year.
Tight end Dae’Quan Wright added 9 catches for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Cayden Lee had 5 catches for 127 yards.
After Ole Miss came away empty-handed at the goal line on its first drive — a hard hit by Jayden Johnson knocked out Wright at the 1 on third down and Ulysses Bentley was stopped on a run up the middle on fourth-and-goal — the Ole Miss defense struck three plays later when Princely Umanmielen recovered a fumble in the end zone after Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green was stripped by TJ Dottery.
Green led Arkansas down the field on its next drive with a 20-yard pass to Andrew Armstrong and back-to-back 14-yard quarterback keepers, but he was injured on the second run. Backup quarterback Malachi Singleton couldn't move the offense from the Ole Miss 32 and the Razorbacks settled for a career-long 55-yard field goal by Matthew Shipley to cut the score to 7-3.
The Rebels cruised from there, scoring touchdowns on seven of their next eight drives.
Watkins' first two touchdown receptions put Ole Miss ahead 28-3 by the 10:07 mark in the second quarter. Arkansas briefly put up a fight by scoring on Rashod Dubinion's 6-yard touchdown run and forcing a punt.
Shipley missed a 45-yard field goal with 1:18 remaining in the first half and the Rebels marched down the field to tack on a score before halftime. The 73-yard drive included passes of 27 and 14 yards to Watkins, who scored on a 3-yard touchdown catch with 5 seconds left in the half.
Dart played well into the fourth quarter. He completed 25 of 31 passes and also rushed 9 times for 55 yards when adjusted for sacks. His 31-yard scramble on third-and-8 set up the Rebels' first touchdown after halftime.
Green did not play after halftime for Arkansas. He finished the game 10-of-14 passing for 158 yards and rushed 5 times for 43 yards when adjusted for sacks. Green was sacked 5 times for minus-23 yards, and Ole Miss posted 8 sacks after recording 10 last week at Oklahoma.
Singleton led three second-half touchdown drives in his most extensive playing time. The redshirt freshman completed 11 of 14 passes for 207 yards and 1 touchdown, and rushed 5 times for 57 yards and 1 touchdown when adjusted for sacks.
Singleton’s 13-yard touchdown run capped Arkansas' first drive after halftime. He also had a 60-yard touchdown negated for an illegal formation penalty late in the fourth quarter, but he rebounded on the drive and found Luke Hasz for a 22-yard touchdown pass, the first of Singleton's career.
Austin Simmons, a redshirt freshman, completed 3 of 3 passes for 47 yards and 1 touchdown after replacing Dart in the fourth quarter.
Arkansas has next week off. The Razorbacks are scheduled to host No. 5 Texas on Nov. 16.
Ole Miss is scheduled to host No. 2 Georgia next Saturday.
