Why is Margin-Top Percentage Calculated Based on Width in CSS?

How Margin-Top Percentage is Calculated in CSS?

When applying a margin-top percentage to a child element within a parent container, it's important to understand how the percentage is calculated. Percentage margins are relative to the width of the containing block, not the height.

W3C Specification

According to the W3C specification, the margin-top percentage is calculated with respect to the width, not the height, of the containing block. This ensures consistency between horizontal and vertical margins, and avoids circular dependencies when calculating element heights.

Reason for Width-Based Margin Calculation

There are two primary reasons for basing vertical margins on the width of the containing block:

  • Horizontal and Vertical Consistency: The margin-top and margin-bottom percentages should behave consistently with respect to margin-left and margin-right percentages, which are based on the width.
  • Avoiding Circular Dependency: The height of a block is typically determined by its content, which in turn depends on the top and bottom margins. Basing vertical margins on the width breaks this circular dependency and allows for logical page layout.

Example

Let's consider a scenario with a parent container with a height of 100px and a width of 500px, and a child element with margin-top: 50%. The margin-top percentage is calculated relative to the width of the container, which would be 50% of 500px. Therefore, the margin-top would be 250px, which is half the width.

Code Example

The following CSS demonstrates the effect of setting margin-top to 50% with a width-based container:

<code class="css">.container {
  background: lightblue;
  padding: 10px;
  height: 100px;
  width: 500px;
}

p {
  display: block;
  border: 1px solid red;
  margin-top: 50%;
}</code>

In this example, the child element will have a margin-top of 250px, which is calculated as 50% of the container's 500px width.

mPDF is a PHP library that can generate PDF files from UTF-8 encoded HTML. The original author, Ian Back, wrote mPDF to output PDF files "on the fly" from his website and handle different languages. It is slower than original scripts like HTML2FPDF and produces larger files when using Unicode fonts, but supports CSS styles etc. and has a lot of enhancements. Supports almost all languages, including RTL (Arabic and Hebrew) and CJK (Chinese, Japanese and Korean). Supports nested block-level elements (such as P, DIV),
