Romance is a core part of the Dragon Age experience, and naturally Dragon Age: The Veilguard is no different. All seven companions are romance options, and of those, Taash might be the most interesting as their relationship with Rook is entangled with a relationship with themselves and their own body, as well as complexities caused by an overbearing mother who wants what's best for them, despite the two not always seeing eye to eye.
Though BioWare's romances have gotten more narratively complex over the years, they still operate on the same basic principle - you talk to your chosen beau enough and select the 'heart' option when it becomes available. However, you will need to complete certain quests to progress Taash's storyline (or whichever character you choose) and will need to maintain high enough approval from them to unlock conversations that allow you to flirt.
How To Recruit Taash
Taash, along with Emmrich, is part of the final wave of characters who can attract to The Veilguard's cause. After successfully defending Minrathous or Treviso, you will arrive back at the Lighthouse to find that Lucanis or Neve has left (depending on which option you chose).
They will return after Taash and Emmrich have been picked up, and will gain the Hardened status. Their disappearance, and the struggle of the previous quest, leads Rook to seek out a necromancer and a dragon hunter, the latter being Taash.
This cutscene in the aftermath unlocks the quest The Dragon Slayer, which takes you to Rivain and leads to Taash being recruited. This gives you an insight into Taash's relationship with their mother, which forms a core part of their arc you will need to navigate as part of a successful relationship - or, as Taash calls it, successful 'in taamlock'.
Taash Romance Quests And Events
Below is a list of all the quests and conversations that are included as part of unlocking, and then developing, your relationship with Taash.
Quest/Event | Outcome |
The Dragon Slayer (Quest) | Taash is recruited |
Dragon Class (Conversation) | Taash teaches you about Dragons with the Lords of Fortune |
Fire On The Sands (Outing) | Learn more about Taash's relationship with their mother |
Fit For A Dragon Slayer | Find Taash's gift in the Hall of Valor shop and give it to them |
Conversation with Neve and Taash in Lighthouse, Dining Hall | Encourage Taash to explore their gender indentity |
Conversation with Taash in Lighthouse, Taash Quarters (Locked until After The Storm) | Tell Taash you are serious about romance, not just flirting |
A Little Dragon Hatches (Conversation) | Locks in Taash romance (or ends it), tells Taash to embrace her non-binary identity |
Secrets Of The Qunari (Conversation) | Taash is not ready to come out to their mother, so tell them 'You're worth standing up for' (Sympathetic) |
Conversation with Taash in Lighthouse, Kitchen (Locked until Fire And Ice) | Taash's mother does not approve of your relationship, nor does she support Taash being non-binary |
Slaying The Fangscorcher (Quest) | Speak to Taash at Lighthouse, complete quest to kill High Dragon |
Kataranda the Stormrider (Quest) | Available in Taash's Quarters, complete quest to kill High Dragon |
Lair of the Dragon King (Quest, Locked until Blood of Arlathan) | Speak to Taash at Lighthouse, complete quest to kill High Dragon. Whether Taash embraces Qunari or Rivaini tradtions does not impact romance but does unlock new costume |
Words of Fire (Outing) | Speak to Taash at Lighthouse, grants Little Dragon Trophy/Achievement |
Speak To Taash before Isle of the Gods | Taash rejects a romantic send off, and do not want to think about the chance one of you doesn't survive |
Speak to Taash before The Last Gambit | The final, more intimate romantic Scene: Organize & Share Photos between Rook and Taash |
Dragon Class expires if not done before The Seige of Weisshaupt, but it is not mandatory for a Taash romance, though it does give more insight into their personality and boosts approval.
How To Quickly Boost Your Approval With Taash
You won't unnecessarily unlock these quests or events right after one another - you need to have your relationship high enough, and certain major quests and locked to specific parts of the game. For the former, there are a few things to keep in mind. The most obvious one is to take Taash along on a lot of quests - every quest completed gives a minor approval boost to companions who were taken along on the journey.
While on these missions, Taash favours Sarcastic or Aggressive responses, though they do not disapprove of Kind responses. They also approve of Fearful responses if the issue is specifically around the undead and necromancy, though be aware that Emmrich will likely disapprove of these reactions and will often be on these missions by default.
During the Siege of Weisshaupt, you must choose whether to knock out or talk sense into the First Warden, and all seven companions will react strongly. Taash greatly approves of you knocking him out, as does Harding, Neve, Lucanis, and Davrin, so it's the smart choice to make overall. This is the only 50/50 decision that has a major impact on Taash's approval.
Despite having an aversion to all things undead, the companion that Taash grows closest to at the Lighthouse is Emmrich. When you see them arguing in Emmrich's office, you can interfere. Here, you should either side with Taash that the undead are creepy (which, in turn, lowers Emmrich's approval) or sit on the fence and say the pair are more similar than they realise, which doesn't boost either approval rating, but doesn't lower it either.
Whether you encourage them to change the subject or find common ground does not impact the romance, but will change future conversation's the duo can have.
Finally, in conversations that aren't specifically about Taash's romance, encouraging them to explore their gender identity issues (or relating to them, if your Rook is trans) also boosts your relationship, as detailed in more depth in our guide on helping Taash to come out. For conversations with their mother, Taash ultimately knows their mother loves them, so favours Sympathetic responses that offer understanding and Kind responses that see things from their side.
Where To Fiind Taash's Gift In Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Unlike some other games with gift giving, Dragon Age: The Veilguard doesn't have a mutlitude to choose from. In fact, each character has a single unique gift from them that you can find throughout the game and give to them for a major boost to their approval. You can find Taash's gift at the Hall of Valor once you have unlocked it, which comes with recruiting Taash. It is Priceless Ancient Trinkets and it costs 90 gold.
