Brits are being urged to check their spare change after a "unique" coin sold for a massive £10,000 online.

TikTok user @coincollectingwizard, who has over 205,000 followers on the social media platform, told viewers to check their pockets and penny jars for one particular item that pre-dates the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

The coin collecting expert shared a coin that was used during pre-decimalisation, a half crown, which was worth one eighth of one pound, or two shillings and six pence.

He noted that the coin in question had a "mintage of 166,008 [meaning that] you could easily grab anywhere between £450 and £10,000, depending on the condition of the coin."

The coin in question is the 1905 Half Crown, which showcases a portrait of King Edward VII on the obverse, facing right and wearing a laurel wreath.

The reverse displays a crowned shield of the Royal Arms within a wreath of roses, thistles, and shamrocks, symbolising the unity of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Cambridgeshire Coins currently has the coin listed for a price of £8,250, adding that the cost is so high because the piece was in About Uncirculated Condition (AUNC).

It comes after a limited edition 50p coin sold for a staggering £216 – more than 400 times its face value.

The reason behind this coin’s value is thanks to an unusual design on the tails side of the piece, which was produced for the 2012 London Olympics.

The design on the tails depicts a cartoon high-jumper, which was drawn by a nine-year-old prior to the Games.

The image was created by schoolgirl Florence Jackson in 2009 for a competition organised by the long-running children’s TV show Blue Peter.

It features a high jumper bending backwards over a pole, with a surprised look on its face.

Florence’s drawing was the winning contender out of 17,000 entries, ultimately making her the youngest-ever person to design a coin.

Over 2.2 million of the Blue Peter 50p coins were issued, with most minted in 2011.

This is an improvement on its ranking in 2022, which hints that the coin is steadily increasing in value.

What makes the particular coin listed on eBay so special is that it was minted in 2009, the year the design won the Blue Peter competition.

These coins were uncirculated and remained unreleased to the public for use in shops, meaning they had to be bought directly from the Royal Mint.
