Vitalik Buterin has outlined key steps for Ethereum’s scaling, emphasizing the role of Helios, a multichain light client.

Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Outlines Helios's Role in Scaling

Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin highlighted the importance of integrating multichain light clients, such as Helios, into user wallets to facilitate light client verification on Ethereum’s Layer 1 and Layer 2 networks.

In his recent posts on X (formerly Twitter), Buterin shared his thoughts on the matter.

Highlighting the role of Helios or other light clients in user wallets, Buterin noted that their integration is crucial for users to be able to check the validity of transactions without running full nodes. This becomes especially important considering Ethereum's plans for an ecosystem with thousands of rollups.

For the ecosystem to be sustainable and users to remain secure, a functional and verifiable light client is essential.

Noah Citron, a developer involved with Helios, further elaborated on the project's goals to build a multichain light client.

Citron pointed out that currently, rollup operators need a full node for each chain they work with, which becomes problematic as the number of chains increases. Helios aims to optimize this process by providing a highly efficient light client for Ethereum's Layer 2 solutions, including Optimism, Base, Unichain and other platforms built on the OP Stack.

Rollup Interoperability and Cross-Chain Communication

As ETH scales, rollup interoperability becomes a key focus. Some current proposals, such as Optimism's Superchain and zkSync's Elastic Chain, have proposed interconnecting rollups.

According to Citron, these solutions will rely on secure light clients that will enable rollup operators to validate cross-chain messages.

Helios' current support for the OP Stack serves as a step in this direction. Through signed sequencer pre-confirmations, Helios can co-ordinate the data across the different rollups in the Superchain ecosystem, reducing the burden on rollup operators.
