In CSS, pseudo elements, such as :before and :after, generate content that appears before or after an element in the document tree. However, this generated content is not considered an object that can contain content itself.

Instead, pseudo element content interacts with other boxes as if it were real elements inserted just inside their associated element. Therefore, there is no "object" containing "content" (since pseudo element content is content itself) to which the gradient filter can be applied.

As a result, gradient filters are not applicable to pseudo elements in IE8 and other browsers with similar rendering engines.
