Security firm Asymmetric Research has joined the Stacks ecosystem to help secure the Bitcoin Layer 2 (L2) network.

The company will play a key role in ensuring secure transfers of sBTC, a synthetic Bitcoin asset launching on Stacks.

Asymmetric is already active in the Stacks ecosystem, having served as an embedded security team during an audit of sBTC and participating in the Stacks signer network through the delegation program.

With a background in securing blockchain protocols, Asymmetric has worked with projects like Wormhole, Jump Crypto, Solana, Cosmos, Berachain, and others.

The company is also a major contributor to Solana's new validator client, Firedancer.

Signers are crucial to the Stacks network, enabling secure transfers between BTC and sBTC by handling the deposit and withdrawal process.

Asymmetric joins an industry group that includes BitGo, Blockdaemon, Copper, Figment, Kiln, Luganodes, and Chorus One in ensuring the reliability and security of sBTC transactions.

The Stacks Signer network has grown to include over 30 institutional node operators, making it one of the most resilient in the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Set to launch in Q4 of this year, sBTC will provide developers with a decentralized and programmable Bitcoin asset that is backed 1:1 by BTC.

This new asset will allow developers to tap into Bitcoin's security, network advantages, and over $1.2 trillion in latent capital.

sBTC is expected to drive further growth in Bitcoin DeFi, unlocking new opportunities for developers and users.

Asymmetric Research's addition to the Stacks ecosystem strengthens its multi-layered approach to security.

In addition to a decentralized network of validators and signers, sBTC's design includes 100% Bitcoin finality, ensuring that its security is backed by Bitcoin's $2.5 billion consensus network.

The Stacks security framework includes several ongoing initiatives, such as audits by Asymmetric, collaborations with other leading signers, the onboarding of Hypernative, a whitehat security program, and partnerships with security-focused organizations like the Staking Defense League.

The ecosystem also runs the Immunefi bug bounty program and dedicates Stacks Foundation Residents to fuzz and penetration testing throughout 2024.
