Circle Launches Native USDC on Sui Blockchain

Fintech giant Circle has officially launched native USDC on the Sui blockchain, enabling seamless access to USDC liquidity without the need for bridging. This move comes as part of Circle's broader strategy to enhance stablecoin availability across multiple blockchain networks.

According to circle.com, native USDC is now available on Sui, offering developers and users direct access to USDC liquidity. Being the first layer-1 blockchain to integrate native USDC, Sui is a fast, secure, and scalable platform for developers to build on-chain applications. Utilizing the Move programming language, native USDC is set to empower developers to work with the largest regulated dollar-backed stablecoin in the industry.

As of October 2024, Sui's ecosystem has expanded to include over 85 applications, spanning a diverse range of use cases, including decentralized finance (DeFi), gaming, and e-commerce. This growing ecosystem is poised to benefit from the direct availability of USDC.

Native USDC on Sui eliminates the need for bridging, providing a stable foundation for developers. Native USDC is issued directly by Circle and is redeemable on a 1:1 basis for US dollars. In contrast, the bridged version, known as wUSDC, is facilitated by Wormhole and is not directly issued by Circle. This distinction is crucial for developers and users who require compatibility with Circle's Mint and APIs.

Circle is working closely with Sui, Mysten Labs, and Wormhole to ensure a smooth transition from wUSDC to native USDC. As part of this effort, the upcoming Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) will enable seamless native USDC transfers across different blockchains.

With the addition of USDC on Sui, exchanges, digital wallets, and institutional traders will gain access to dollar-backed stablecoins for creating various financial products. Developers can now build innovative DeFi applications, such as Cetus, Navi Protocol, and Suilend, catering to the growing demand for digital financial solutions. Individuals can also hold savings in digital dollars, bypassing traditional banking systems.

To get started, businesses can apply for a Circle Mint account to obtain on/off-ramps for converting fiat currency to USDC on Sui. Developers interested in building with USDC on Sui can begin by exploring Circle's open-source, permissionless protocol through the available developer documentation.

Meanwhile, USDC is also set to go live on Coinbase in the coming days. This move will further expand the reach and accessibility of the stablecoin.
