A new 50p coin could be worth a staggering £7,000 to lucky Brits who manage to find it in their change.

The coin, which was unveiled earlier this year, features King Charles III on the reverse.

It is the first 50p to be minted with the new King’s effigy and is designed to celebrate the Atlantic salmon.

According to Coin Hunter, there are rumours that the coin has a mintage of just 500,000.

This would make it the second rarest circulating 50p coin in the UK.

The rarest 50p coin is the Kew Gardens, which has a mintage of 210,000.

Speaking to his 196,100 followers on TikTok, coin collecting enthusiast @CoinCollectingWizard said: “This 50p is selling for crazy money, you can find it in your change.

“There are rumours the Atlantic Salmon 50p that only recently entered circulation could have a low mintage of only 500,000 coins.

“This would make it the second rarest circulating 50p that can be found in your change.

“The rarest 50p as we all know is the elusive Kew Gardens, which has a mintage of 210,000.

“If the whispers are true and the Salmon 50p's numbers are as low as 500,000, it's bound to become a prime catch for numismatics.”

However, the TikToker did note that the mintage figure is “only a rumour at this stage”.

“No one knows how many are out there or how many more are due to be seen,” he added.

The coin has already sparked excitement among collectors, with some people reporting that they have found several of the new coins in their change.

Others are yet to find one and are hoping to get lucky soon.

On social media, people have been sharing their thoughts on the coin and its potential value.

One person wrote: “Crazy money.”

Another added: “I have one.”

A third said: “I'm still looking for one.”

The rarest coins in the UK include the 1937 Edward VIII Gold Sovereign, which is reportedly worth £1 million and was last sold to a private collector in 2023.

Only six of the coins were ever minted and they were never released into general circulation.

Another valuable coin is the 1933 George V Penny, of which seven were issued and are said to be worth around £73,000.

Both coins were originally created as pattern coins, which are experimental coins produced to evaluate a design, new metal or production method.
