A Kew Gardens 2009 50p coin has been spotted on sale for 40 times its face value - and the seller hopes to get £2,000 for it.

Romford-based seller eastlondoncoinhunt is advertising the "genuine rare" coin on eBay for the huge sum, although they will also accept best offers.

One person is watching the item, but as the coin is up for sale and not for auction, there are no bidders.

The Kew Gardens 2009 coin is the rarest 50p in circulation today, according to the Royal Mint, with only 210,000 ever minted.

The Royal Mint says that the "iconic" 50p coin - which depicts the Chinese Pagoda at Kew Gardens with a leafy climber around it - is "arguably the most sought after" by collectors.

On its website, the UK's official maker of British coins says: "The Kew Gardens 50p is the rare 50p collectors go crazy for.

"It is not uncommon for this fabulous 50p to sell for as much as £700 today, with numismatists desperate to add it to their collection."

However, Rebecca Morgan, the director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, stressed that a coin is "ultimately worth what the collector is willing to pay for it".

Ms Morgan said: "There are occasionally reports of coins selling for large amounts on the secondary market, some of which seem a bit farfetched, so we want to ensure collectors have the right information and pay a fair price.

"There are factors you should consider before committing to a price.

"This can include the condition of the coin, its design, mintage figure and what it’s made of."

The Kew Gardens 50p being sold by eastlondoncoinhunt is visibly not in "mint" condition, which would give it a higher value.

If anyone has any coins they are unsure of the rarity or authenticity of, the Royal Mint offers a range of services to help establish their value.
