Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a non-profit community dedicated to fostering innovation in the blockchain and cryptocurrency industries, has announced a partnership with Unified Patents to launch Blockchain Zone. The initiative aims to combat patent trolls, also known as non-practicing entities (NPEs), that own crypto patents but do not actively engage in the development or production of blockchain technologies.
According to COPA, these patent trolls often threaten to sue blockchain and crypto companies, impacting the growth of the crypto-economy and stifling innovation. The partnership with Unified Patents will focus on challenging and invalidating any unwarranted patent assertions by NPEs.
In a statement, Paul Grewal, Chief Legal Officer at Coinbase and a member of COPA, highlighted the importance of protecting blockchain technologies from patent trolls.
“Patent trolls are roadblocks to innovation, slowing down the advancement of technology and stifling creativity, especially in the fast-moving world of cryptocurrency. They must be stopped so that the community can continue the critical work of building the crypto-economy.”
Steve Lee, Lead at Spiral and a COPA member, further emphasized the organization’s efforts in removing barriers to crypto innovation. The partnership with Unified Patents aligns with COPA’s mission to support the community.
“The non-profit community has worked tirelessly to reduce the barriers to crypto innovation. This partnership with Unified Patents will help us further protect our members from patent trolls.”
Kevin Jakel, founder and CEO of Unified Patents, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with COPA.
“We are excited to partner with COPA to ensure that the technology remains free and clear of the all-too-common baseless patent assertions affecting other sectors of the economy.”
COPA’s collaboration with Unified Patents will join over 300 other companies in the effort to deter the assertion of invalid patents by NPEs.
