Amazon launches Fire HD 8 (2024) series with more RAM and an upgraded camera

Amazon has renewed the Fire HD 8 tablet for 2024. The 12th generation Fire HD 8 comes with the same design as the previous generation but brings performance upgrades among others.

The Fire HD 8 (2024) retains the 8-inch IPS HD (1280 x 800) display of the previous generation. It still has thick bezels and it is housed in the same polycarbonate body. It is available in Black, Emerald, and Hibiscus.

The main changes are under the hood. The Fire HD 8 (2024) now has 3GB of RAM for the 32GB version and 4GB of RAM for the 64GB version. This is a significant upgrade from the 2GB of RAM available for both storage variants on the 2022 edition. The tablet is still powered by a hexa-core processor clocked at 2.0GHz, but the additional RAM should bring improvements in performance.

Amazon has also upgraded the rear camera from 2MP to 5MP but the front camera remains a 2MP sensor. The Fire HD 8 has dual-band Wi-Fi but no Wi-Fi 6 support. There's an audio jack, Bluetooth 5.2, and up to 13 hours of battery life, just like the 2022 edition. It doesn't charge any faster, and despite supporting up to 15W fast charging, Amazon has chosen to ship it with a 5W adapter.

It wouldn't be a 2024 device without AI. Yes, the new Fire HD 8 (2024) comes with AI features such as a writing assistant that is integrated with the on-device keyboard and works across e-mails, word documents, and even social media. Users will be able to choose pre-set styles for their writing, convert informal text to professional text, and get writing suggestions.

The Silk Browser has also been infused with AI as it can now provide summaries of web articles. Amazon also says there is a wallpaper creator that allows users to enter prompts to generate high-res wallpapers. This feature isn't exclusive to the Fire HD 8 (2024) but will also be available to all compatible Fire tablets later this month.

The Fire HD 8 (2024) is available to buy now from Amazon. The good thing is that it comes with a heavy discount from now through to October 9. The 32GB version can be bought for $54.99 instead of $99.99 while the 4GB 64GB version is priced at $84.99 instead of $129.99. If you want them without lockscreen ads, the price jumps to $69.99 ($114.99) and $99.99 ($144.99) respectively.

As is the norm, there are also kid-friendly versions of the tablet. They are the Fire HD 8 Kids and the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro. Both start at $69.99 (original price of $139.99) and come with rugged cases in a variety of colors and Disney/Marvel editions.
