Manjaro-based ultralight Mabox Linux 24.09 now available for download

Originally a fork of the blazing-fast Blackbox window manager from the early 2000s, Openbox has been entirely rewritten in the meantime and is now one unique piece of code. This simple and highly flexible window manager is part of Mabox Linux, a Manjaro stable-based distro that also comes with the tint2 panel/taskbar and the Jgmenu X11-inspired menu, which was designed with scripting, ricing, and tweaking in mind. Yesterday, Mabox Linux received a refresh that took its version number up to 24.09.

For now, there is no release announcement available anywhere. However, the SourceForge repository includes a text file that contains the list of packages included and the version number of each one. The size of the ISO file is 2.5 GB, and the list of updated packages (compared to those in version 24.08, which was released on August 22nd) includes the following highlights:

  • audacious-gtk3 4.4.1-1 (from audacious 4.4-1)
  • bash 5.2.037-1 (from bash 5.2.026-3)
  • dhcpcd 10.0.10-1 (replaces dhcpcd 10.0.8-1)
  • firefox 130.0-1 (instead of firefox 129.0.1-2)
  • kmod 33-2 (replaces kmod 33-1)
  • linux66 6.6.47-1 (from linux66 6.6.46-1)
  • manjaro-pulse 20240817-1 (instead of manjaro-pulse 202221015-2)
  • vim 9.1.0689-1 (replaces vim 9.1.0672-1)

In addition to Firefox, which was mentioned in the list above, Mabox comes with the Geany text editor/IDE, PCManFM file manager alongside the FSearch search utility, as well as the Terminator terminal emulator preinstalled. However, there is no default mail reader included, so those who want to use one can choose their favorite and install it themselves.

Since this distro is based on Manjaro, Atanas Georgiev Rusev's Manjaro Linux User Guide: Gain proficiency in Linux through one of its best user-friendly Arch-based distributionscan be useful to Mabox users as well. This book is available at 26% off via Kindle ($26.67 instead of $35.99) and in paperback format ($28.07 instead of $44.99, after a 38% discount).
