New Fujifilm fixed-lens GFX camera to debut new medium format sensor, could kick off all-new series

Fujifilm has seen a lot of success in recent years, largely due to its film simulations and the popularity of its compact rangefinger-style cameras on social media. However, it doesn't seem to be resting on its laurels, according to Fujirumors. The ubiquitous leaker previously leaked that Fujifilm would be launching a fixed-lens GFX camera in 2025.

A more recent report from Fujirumors claims that the new fixed-lens GFX camera will launch with an all-new sensor. While Fujifilm is known for its X-Trans sensors, the GFX line-up does not use the same X-Trans sensors, instead relying on more traditional CMOS tech with a Bayer layout for the medium-format cameras.

While little is known about the new fixed-lens GFX camera and its accompanying sensor, it's entirely possible that Fujifilm will bring the GFX line-up into the X-Trans universe in 2025. According to Fujifilm, the X-Trans filter layout is superior to traditional CMOS Bayer setups, because it can reduce moiré effects on patterned surfaces.

It's also possible that Fujifilm may be working on a BSI (backside illuminated) medium-format sensor for the fixed-lens GFX camera. However, all this is simply speculation, although more leaks and rumours about the upcoming camera are likely to surface soon. Fujifilm is also rumoured to be launching an updated X-Pro camera and a new budget friendly X-E camera in 2025, so strap in — it's going to be a busy year for Fujifilm launches.

What's potentially more interesting about this new GFX camera is that Fujifilm traditionally uses the same hardware configuration across multiple cameras, so it's likely we'll see other GFX cameras adopt the new sensor soon after the new GFX camera launches.
