Meta is set to announce deals with some of Hollywood’s most high-profile actors to voice its Meta AI chatbot, in a move that may give the company a competitive edge over OpenAI.

The ChatGPT-maker found itself in hot water earlier this year after it was alleged that one of the chatbot voices closely resembled the voice of Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson.

However, Johansson later denied any involvement in the project and threatened legal action against OpenAI if the voice was not removed.

After the incident, Johansson was included in Time’s annual list of the “100 Most Influential People in AI for her pushback against the company.

Now, Meta’s signing of Hollywood actors to voice its chatbot could give the company a one-up in the generative AI race.

According to a Reuters report, citing people familiar with the matter, Meta has secured five voice deals with Judi Dench, Kristen Bell, John Cena, Awkwafina, and Keegan-Michael Key.

These celebrity voices will be available at launch in English-speaking markets on Meta’s major applications, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

Like the rest of the industry, Meta has been increasingly focusing on the integration of generative AI across every facet of its business. Meta’s AI chatbot can be used to generate images and answer text prompts.

The social media giant rushed to release the product after the immediate success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022. However, the company’s generative AI efforts have largely paled in comparison to ChatGPT throughout 2023.

OpenAI’s chatbot has managed to integrate generative AI into a wide range of applications, from storytelling and music generation to coding assistance and customer service interactions.

ChatGPT also has a massive user base of over 300 million people, which gives the chatbot a significant advantage over Meta’s AI chatbot.

Now, Meta is hoping to close the gap on OpenAI by signing deals with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars to voice its chatbot.

These deals may give Meta’s chatbot a more natural and engaging voice, which could attract more users and give the chatbot an edge in conversations.
