God of War Ragnarök criticized - Sony forces players to create PSN account again

After the reboot of the God of War series, which was previously PlayStation-exclusive, was released for PC for the first time in 2022, the PC port of God of War Ragnarök was eagerly awaited by fans. Since September 19, PC gamers have been able to continue the story of Kratos and Atreus as they battle gods and monsters to prevent the impending Ragnarök. The action RPG offers a strategic combat system, complex puzzles and an in-depth story. However, the good mood is quickly overturned.

Despite the praised story and captivating gameplay, Ragnarök is currently in the crossfire of criticism. Of the current 2,600 reviews on Steam only 67 percent are currently positive. By comparison, the predecessor (God of War 2018) has an "extremely positive" rating average with 96 percent positive opinions from over 90,000 reviews. The main point of criticism from players is the requirement to create a PlayStation Network account for a purely single-player game. On Reddit, the opinions are very critical. Many see no point in requiring an online account for a game that does not involve online interaction. There are also security concerns.

This practice is not entirely new at PlayStation. Already with Ghost of Tsushima and Helldivers 2 PC players were forced to create a PSN account. With Helldivers 2, however, Sony has rowed back again and has lifted the account requirement. It remains to be seen whether this will also happen with God of War Ragnarök following the harsh criticism. So far, however, Sony does not seem to want to deviate from the current state of affairs. However, the current player numbers, which are likely to be far below expectations, could persuade Sony to give in. According to Steam DB, Ragnarök has so far had a peak of around 25,000 players. The predecessor had up to 73,000 players at peak times.
