Sony recently pulled the plug on Concord after the much-hyped title after it failed to garner attention from fans. Colin Moriarty spoke to someone involved with the game's development, who revealed how much the game actually cost to make.
Apparently, Concord set Sony back by a whopping $400 million. The company considered it to be the 'future of PlayStation' and likened it to a franchise like Star Wars. It is, by far, the most money has ever spent on a single game, although some under-development projects are slated to cost more.
Concord was in 'horrible' shape before launch, which is why Sony has to spend so much to get the game in a playable state before launch. It harboured a culture of 'toxic positivity' around it, meaning nobody could criticize it internally.
With this information, one can safely assume Concord to be one of the, if not the, largest failed AAA games of all time. While Sony insists it might come back later, it will be difficult to wipe the sheer magnitude of failure behind. Now, Sony could remaster Bloodborne and easily make some of that money back but that's a topic for another day.
I spoke extensively with someone who worked on Concord, and it's so much worse than you think. It was internally referred to as "The Future of PlayStation" with Star Wars-like potential, and a dev culture of "toxic positivity" halted any negative feedback.Making it cost $400m. pic.twitter.com/F5O0oy4gaQ
