XMG / Schenker is updating the APEX 17 gaming lineup with AMD’s currently top-of-the-line Dragon Range processors. Last year’s APEX 17 was powered by the Ryzen 7 7840HS with Zen 4 Phoenix architecture, but the APEX 17 MAX 2024 model (M24) gets a significant upgrade featuring the Ryzen 9 7945HX Zen 4 Dragon Range model that essentially is the mobile version of the desktop-grade Ryzen 9 7950X with 16 cores and 32 threads.
While it almost matches the performance of an Intel i9-14900HX, the Ryzen 9 7945HX is significantly more power-efficient, especially in demanding multi-core scenarios, where the AMD model can consume up to 72% less power, as per the internal tests provided by XMG.
The display side ditches the 1080p option and only features the 17.3-inch 2560 x 1440 panel, which is slightly brighter at 330 nits and offers 100% DCI-P3 and sRGB color coverage. However, it now features a lower refresh rate of 165 Hz instead of 240 Hz. As far as dGPU options go, these are the same Nvidia RTX 4070 and 4060 models with 115 W base power and slightly reduced dynamic boosts of only 10 W instead of 25 W.
Another improvement is seen on the battery side that ups the capacity from 62 to 73 Wh. Additionally, the iGPU-only mode, selectable via the Control Center, enhances battery efficiency by completely deactivating the NVIDIA dGPU after a system restart, allowing the system to rely solely on the energy-efficient AMD iGPU. A MUX switch also enables users to switch the internal display connection between the dGPU and iGPU.
With the switch from Phoenix to Dragon Range, RAM capacity has also been improved, as the APEX 17 MAX supports up to 96 GB DDR5-4800 or 64 GB DDR5-5200. The storage solution comes with 2x M.2 PCie 4.0 slots for a maximum of 8 TB.
Port selection remains unchanged with 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (data transfer only), 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 (powered), HDMI 2.1 miniDP 1.4a video outs, GbE and audio jacks plus full-size D card reader. Wireless connectivity is getting a speed bump as well, with an upgrade from Wi-Fi 6 to 6E, while the 1080p webcam is the same.
The base configuration of the XMG APEX 17 MAX is priced at €1,599 and includes AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX, an RTX 4060, 16 GB DDR5-5200 RAM, and a 500 GB SSD. Upgrades, such as an RTX 4070 (€295) and additional RAM or SSD storage options are available. To celebrate the product launch, all configurations are eligible for a 5% early bird discount by using the code “APEX-5”, valid until September 30th.
