Canon has unveiled the EOS C80 6K 35mm full-frame cinema camera with RF lens mount and a slew of top-notch features that enable filmmakers to produce high-quality movies.
The C80 uses a 26.7 MP full-frame back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor with 6.0 μm pixels for 16-stops of dynamic range. The camera is capable of recording detailed full-frame 6K RAW 29.97/25/24/23.98P videos and Super 35mm 4.3K RAW 59.94/50/29.97/25/24/23.98P videos by oversampling the pixel data from the sensor. Additional recording resolutions are possible using compressed XF-AVC and XF-HEVC codecs with up to 4:2:2 10-bit quality. The camera is also capable of taking JPEG photos with a resolution up to 4,096 x 2,160 pixels.
Dual SD card slots support SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards. The camera can record identical videos of a shoot to both cards. The camera can also be set to record a different video of a shoot to the second card such as a slow-motion video.
The C80 sensor incorporates Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus technology with highly accurate human and animal AI focus tracking across the full frame. The AF is aided in low-light situations by the sensitive back-illuminated stacked sensor design that captures more light than traditional sensors. The triple base ISO of this sensor allows shifting of the base ISO from 800 to 3,200 or 12,800, enabling filmmakers to utilize the full 16-stop dynamic range of the sensor in bright or low-light scenes.
Besides the expected slew of input and output connectors, such as SDI, XLR, HDMI, 12G/3G SDI, BNC Timecode, and Ethernet, the camera also has Wi-Fi connectivity. This allows filmmakers to remotely control the camera from an Apple smartphone running the Canon Multi-Camera Control app. Users can control all common exposure settings and even adjust lens focus from afar.
The Canon EOS C80 cinema camera has an MSRP of $5,499 and will be available for purchase from November 30, 2024 (in the Canon store on Amazon). The EOS C80 pairs nicely with Canon CN-R (RF-mount Cinema Prime) lenses like the CN-R35mm T1.5 L F (here on Amazon) or the CN-R85mm T1.3 L F (here on Amazon).
