Fully animated fan-made trailer for the Minecraft film is much better received by the community than the original

A movie in the Minecraft universe has been on the cards since Warner Bros. secured the film rights in 2014. In April 2019, the developers at Majong Studios then announced a few tidbits of information about the plot. The movie revolves around a young girl and a group of adventurers and their fight against the Ender Dragon. The trailer released on September 4 gave fans a first glimpse of the film, but was not well received by the community.

Despite a top-class cast, including Jason Momoa and Jack Black, the mixture of live-action film and comic book graphics did not meet the taste of the fans. Many fans felt that the character Steve, played by Jack Black, was too closely based on the actor's own personality. The trailer has already been viewed over 32 million times, but only received around 620,000 likes - with 1.3 million dislikes.

On 8 September, the 3D artist and animator Alumio, who specializes in Minecraft, stepped up to the plate and released his own, fully animated version of the trailer - and it has been much better received by the community than the original. With around 2 million views, the fan interpretation of the Minecraft trailer has around 230,000 likes and just 400 dislikes.

In the comments section, opinions are predominantly unanimous. Many comments are very positive about the fanmade trailer, such as "This is unironically 1 million times better than the original - great work!" or "Why the actual movie isn't animated like this is a mystery to me". The positive reactions to Alumio's fully animated trailer reveal that the community has strong opinions on the visual representation of the Minecraft film. Whether Warner Bros. and Majong will still be successful with their hybrid implementation remains to be seen in April 2025.
