Luis Buenaventura, Assistant Vice President at GCash, joined BitPinas Editor-in-Chief Michael Mislos for an online interview to discuss his experience
Luis Buenaventura, Head of GCrypto at GCash, joined BitPinas Editor-in-Chief Michael Mislos for an online interview. They discussed Buenaventura’s experience leading GCrypto, his transition from the startup world to corporate life, and updates on his crypto portfolio.
Buenaventura shared that he joined GCash to lead GCrypto, the crypto division of the largest e-wallet in the Philippines. He noted that his background in the startup world differs from the more structured culture of GCash.
“There are nearly two thousand GCash employees, and it’s a very large organization. It’s certainly been a real learning experience. The biggest joke I always hear from my friends is that this is the first time they’ve seen me, Monday through Friday, showing up to work in pants instead of shorts. I’m all formal now.”
Buenaventura added that he is learning new things every day in his role at GCash. He highlighted the differences in language and culture between startups and large organizations.
“But that’s part of the role when you’re in an organization with the kind of reach and customer base that GCash has. It’s worth it. It’s just different, and I’m learning new things every day. There’s so much corporate jargon that I’ve never used before. The language of startups is very different.”
Mislos then asked Buenaventura for an update on a pie chart that was shown in a previous event, which depicted the allocation of his crypto portfolio. Buenaventura explained that the photo was taken during a community meetup in the GCash office, where they discussed portfolio management.
“One of my small achievements since joining GCash is being able to do these big community meet-ups in the GCash office. This photo was taken on the seventh floor of the GCash office, where we invited a bunch of people from the local crypto community to talk. In this case, we were teaching portfolio management.”
Buenaventura went on to describe his simple portfolio strategy, which includes a majority of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins, followed by a selection of Layer 1s and other coins for this cycle. He mentioned that one of the coins in the Layer 1s slice is Celo.
“I made a mistake here. I say Layer 1 because I was thinking of coins like Solana, BNB, and Celo. But I forgot that Celo isn’t a Layer 1 anymore—it used to be, but now it’s a layer two on Ethereum. So it’s one of those coins in that Layer 1 slice of my pie chart.”
