DJI Neo released as new lightweight drone with 1/2-inch camera that can record 4K videos for under 0

DJI has now released the Neo, its first consumer drone since the quiet introduction of the Mini 4K (curr. $299 on Amazon) in late April. While little was known about the Mini 4K before its official release, a flurry of leaks in recent weeks revealed almost everything to know about the Neo. As such, DJI has more confirmed pre-release leaks than anything else.

As expected, the DJI Neo weighs approximately 135 g. Additionally, the drone measures 130 x 157 x 48.5 mm, which makes it considerably smaller than DJI's other recent drones. Nonetheless, the Neo finds itself with a 1/2-inch camera sensor that captures images at 12 MP with a 117.6° FoV, a 14 mm equivalent focal length, an f/2.8 aperture and 100-6400 ISO. Moreover, the drone is capable of recording videos in 4K/30 FPS or 1080p/60 FPS with electronic image stabilisation (EIS) activated or disabled at a maximum video bitrate of 75 Mbps.

It is worth keeping in mind that the Neo only has a single-axis mechanical gimbal, which can be tilted between -90° and 60°. On top of that, the drone is rated for 18 minutes of flight time from a 1,435 mAh battery. Theoretically, the Neo should be capable of flying up to 7 km in that time, albeit when flying forward at a speed of 8 m/s in a windless environment 20 m above sea level, with video mode off and camera parameters set to 1080p/30 FPS.

At launch, DJI is charging $199 for the Neo, a battery and a set of propeller guards. Alternatively, the drone can be purchased together with three batteries and a two-way charging hub for $289 as part of a 'Combo' package. Please note that DJI does not include an RC control at either of these prices though and will not begin shipping pre-orders until early October in the US. By contrast, the drone is available with a Fly More Combo in other markets like Europe and the UK, which adds an RC-N3 remote controller, for €349 and £299. Incidentally, pre-orders will begin shipping for the Neo later this week in Europe and the UK, where the drone starts at €199 and £169, respectively.
