Remember the Max Headroom incident? NEAR seems to.

A Crypto Project's Weird Marketing 'Hack' Riffed on Infamous 1987 Chicago TV Hijacking

A crypto project pulled a weird marketing ‘hack’ to promote its upcoming event, riffing on an infamous 1987 Chicago TV hijacking.

In case you missed it: A masked "hacker" took over NEAR Protocol's social media channels on Thursday, poking fun at the crypto project and its community. The masked figure wore sunglasses, a suit and a voice modulator, and appeared in videos posted to NEAR's Twitter, TikTok and YouTube accounts. The videos were later deleted.

The "hacker" criticized NEAR and crypto fans, telling viewers to "get a real job" and calling out people for following NEAR.

"NEAR is a pipe dream, and there's nothing waiting for you in Thailand," the masked figure said in one video, referring to NEAR's upcoming REDACTED hackathon in Thailand.

The videos were part of a marketing stunt by NEAR to promote the event, CoinDesk learned. A representative for NEAR declined to comment for this story.

But the stunt appeared to be having the opposite effect, at least judging by a quick scan of the comments on NEAR's social media posts and crypto community chatter. People were largely critical of the videos, with some mistaking them for an actual hack and others calling the stunt cringey.

Crypto marketing agency Hype later tweeted that NEAR's mindshare increased to its highest levels in three months. But the sentiment was resoundingly negative, the agency noted.

One commenter on NEAR's TikTok account wrote, "There is nothing waiting for you in Thailand."
