OpenAI's former chief scientist raises billion for safe AI systems development

Back in June, OpenAI's former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever co-founded Safe Superintelligence (SSI) with Daniel Gross (previously involved in AI work at Apple) and Daniel Levy, who also worked for OpenAI. With a total of just 10 employees for now, the company is already valued at $5 billion, according to unofficial sources. However, this young startup has just raised $1 billion from investors such as Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and Andreessen Horowitz.

The funds mentioned above will be used for two main goals, which are equally important. While SSI needs to bring in more top researchers and other specialists, such as marketing people, the company also needs to acquire as much computing power as possible. The research teams will be located in Palo Alto, California, and Israel's economic center, namely Tel Aviv.

Although the primary goal is not a secret, the products and services that will carry the SSI brand are shrouded in mystery for now. According to Gross, "It's important for us to be surrounded by investors who understand, respect and support our mission, which is to make a straight shot to safe superintelligence and in particular to spend a couple of years doing R&D on our product before bringing it to market."

In the near future, SSI will probably announce its cloud and hardware providers, as well as the names of the people coming onboard. For now, those interested in this field might want to check out Anan Vemula's Modern Generative AI with ChatGPT and OpenAI Models: Practical Insights and Applications, a book currently priced at $16.75 on both Kindle (or free with Kindle Unlimited) and in paperback format.
