Sony shutters Concord just two weeks after launch

Concord has easily been Sony's most costly fail to date. Eight years of development and millions of dollars later, its peak player count on Steam was in three digits. While it might have been more on the PlayStation 5, the numbers clearly aren't anywhere close enough for Sony to support the game, and that's why it pulled the plug on it. The game (and its servers) will be taken offline on September 6. A blog post on the official PlayStation website says

Therefore, at this time, we have decided to take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024, and explore options, including those that will better reach our players.

Everyone who bought Concord will now get a full refund automatically via their respective platforms (Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation Store). Those who bought the physical version have to contact their retailer. Sony says Concord might return in the future, but hasn't specified when. If it does, it will likely come back as a F2P title. Even if it does, its abrupt takedown has stained its legacy, and Concord will go down as one of the gaming industry's most colossal failures. Weirdly, it comes just a few months after Helldivers 2, another live-service game, broke all expectations to become one of the most successful games launched this year.
