Telegram Faces Heat In South Korea as Authorities Launch Preliminary Investigation

South Korean authorities have launched a preliminary investigation into Telegram over suspicions of abetting deepfake crimes and circulation of explicit content within the country, Yonhap reported on Tuesday.

The head of South Korea’s National Office of Investigation, Woo Jong-soo, highlighted that investigators had already conducted a probe into the allegations prior to the official announcement on Tuesday.

South Korean authorities will also cooperate with French and other international institutions to aid the ongoing investigation into the messaging platform.

The investigation comes after Telegram co-founder and CEO Pavel Durov was arrested by French authorities on August 24 at Le Bourget Airport in Paris over allegations of knowingly facilitating criminal activities on the platform.

Durov was released from detention on August 26, but faces restrictions as the investigation proceeds. As part of his bail conditions, the Telegram executive is under strict supervision, prohibited from leaving France, and must report to authorities twice weekly.

The Telegram CEO's arrest and the subsequent investigation have drawn attention from the crypto community, with some expressing support for Durov and others speculating on the potential impact of the regulatory heat on Telegram's Web3 project, TON.

In other developments, the hacked Indian crypto exchange WazirX is still struggling to recover from its losses, but its hacker is busy shuffling the stolen loot around.

According to a report by blockchain security firm PeckShield on Monday, the hacker has moved 2,240 ETH ($3.4 million) from the WazirX hack to another address in a single transaction.

The hacker has now moved a total of 5,240 ETH ($7.9 million) from the exchange in two transactions, leaving around 1,200 ETH ($1.8 million) in the original address.

The stolen funds were initially detected by on-chain sleuths on August 28, when a hacker made off with 2,850 ETH ($4.3 million) from the exchange. WazirX later confirmed the hack and stated that the stolen funds belonged to its users.
