It always feels dreadful to lose progress in an open-world game. Star Wars Outlaws isn’t exempt from this, so let me explain why you can’t save your game and how the system works.
The save system is a little finicky in Star Wars Outlaws. This is doubly true at the start of the game, where you don’t immediately have control over manual saving.
You can usually save your progress through the pause menu and can have multiple states saved.
You can’t manually save through Outlaw’s introductory areas and must rely on the Auto Save feature instead. Honestly, the system is pretty decent, but it does mean you can lose a few minutes of progress to a poorly timed jump or a gunfight gone wrong.
You should be able to manually save when you reach the first major settlement.
If you’re curious if Star Wars Outlaws is canon, you may be interested to learn that everything post-Disney is, with a couple of notable exceptions.
There are a couple of game states when manually saving is disabled. Firstly, you cannot save your progress while in combat. Even if you’re not actively fighting, if there’s a red symbol in the top corner of the screen, you cannot save until the heat has died down.
It’s important to remember that Auto Saving is also disabled during combat. This can be pretty punishing if you prefer a hands-on approach to battles like me and get into lengthy gunfights.
Manual Saving is also unavailable in Restricted areas, although Auto Saving seems to work. Keep this in mind if you’re short on time and are about to enter a hot zone.
Saving in Star Wars Outlaws is a little clunky but shouldn’t cause problems in the long run. If you’ve encountered a bug where the game thinks you’re in combat even when you’re not, there’s a reliable, if ungraceful, way to fix it.
