Teslas come right after RAM and Rover as safest vehicles in deadly crashes

An analysis of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Fatality and Injury Reporting System has confirmed anecdotal observations that Teslas are some of the safest cars on the road.

According to the new study, Tesla is now in the top 3 of safest automotive brands to be a driver or passenger in during a crash that results in fatal consequences.

Tesla's electric cars come right after the hulking pickup trucks of RAM, or the big Land Rover SUVs, and before Mercedes, Audi, Jeep, Chrysler, or Ford. The CEO of EpicVIN that did the study was equally surprised by its findings:

With many of the brands to feature on this list specializing in larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks in their current range of production vehicles, one would assume these would provide better results in a high-speed accident.

Tesla also aces its crash tests, and there are many good structural reasons for the safety performance that its cars provide during accidents.

Teslas vehicles have "a strong, rigid passenger compartment, fortified battery pack, and overall low center of gravity," tips the NHTSA when listing the excellent safety ratings of the brand.

Tesla also pats itself on the back when it explains away its A-rated crash tests by informing that "these safety fundamentals help to prevent intrusion into the cabin and battery modules, reduce rollover risk, and distribute crash forces systematically away from the cabin – all while providing the foundation for our superior front crumple zone that is optimized to absorb energy and crush more efficiently."

There are plenty of examples when airborne Teslas flip over several times, or of horrific accidents involving much heavier vehicles, where the Tesla car occupants remain largely unscathed, too. In fact, the Model Y was found to be safer than Volvo in the 2024 IIHS crash tests.
