Kyōryū: First gameplay trailer reveals samurai dino adventure in post-apocalyptic Japan

Developer Floating Rock Studio released the first gameplay trailer for its debut project Kyōryū on August 28, 2024. The third-person action adventure game, which was announced in September last year, takes players to a post-apocalyptic Japan in which genetically modified dinosaurs are the dominant species. The game is played from the perspective of Tori, a samurai T-rex who is still young but very intelligent due to the genetic modifications. As Tori, players navigate the ruins of human civilization in Kyōryū, fending off rival dinosaurs along the way.

The trailer shows the Japanese culture and samurai-influenced look of the game developed in Unreal Engine 5 for the first time. Tori can also be seen exploring the world, sneaking past other dinos in the tall grass or stealing a dino egg and putting up with a chase with his mother. At the end of the trailer, Tori’s father appears, helping his son escape a tight spot after being surrounded by three enemy dinosaurs. With its impressive horns, the full-grown T-Rex looks more like a samurai than his son.

More than the trailer reveals is not yet known about Kyōryū's gameplay. However, as the developers have promised, the game will offer an emotional story with lots of cutscenes. The reactions to the first gameplay trailer are predominantly positive, but there are also critical voices. On Reddit, some users find the animations stiff and hope that the gameplay will be smoother in the final version. Although the game is available for pre-order on Steam, there is no specific release date yet. What is certain, however, is that Kyōryū will initially be released exclusively for PC. It is currently unclear whether other platforms will follow.

Developers are also working on an animated series

Floating Rock Studio, which consists of former Weta Digital employees, is also working on an animated series set in the same world as Kyōryū.
