SC to hold conference of chief justices of HCs, district judiciary from April 25
The conference has also scheduled a session on ‘bridging the gap’ to encourage a discussion on how the high courts and Supreme Court can support the needs of the district judiciary in a holistic manner
The apex court on Friday said a conference of chief justices and judges of high courts will be held in Bhopal from April 21 to 23 to deliberate on key issues concerning the district judiciary, including the need for accessibility and inclusivity within the district judiciary.
A bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana took note of the submissions made by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta in the apex court on the conference to be organised by the Madhya Pradesh high court.
The bench, also comprising Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli, said the apex court will be represented by Justice Murari in the conference.
The apex court statement said the conference will begin with a session on “Courtrooms for All” which will include presentations and discussions on the need for accessibility and inclusivity within the district judiciary.
The session will also focus on ensuring safe and equitable access to justice for the marginalised communities, the statement said, adding that the apex court has emphasised on the need to ensure inclusivity in the judicial system on several occasions.
The conference will also address the issue of “judicial security and judicial wellness” along with the safety concerns for judges and several well-being initiatives, it said.
The second day will be marked by a session on “case management” to discuss strategies for efficient case handling and reduction in pendency.
The session on “judicial training — curriculum and methods” will deliberate upon ways to enhance the training programmes for judges, the statement said.
“The conference has also scheduled a session on ‘bridging the gap’ to encourage a discussion on how the high courts and Supreme Court can support the needs of the district judiciary in a holistic manner,” the statement said.

SC reserves order on arbitration eligibilityThe Supreme Court on Friday reserved its verdict on the vexed legal question of whether a person ineligible to become an arbitrator can nominate another as one.

“Arbitration is a method of dispute resolution which is being encouraged by the court. We must ensure that the process is strengthened,” Mehta submitted before a bench headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.
The bench, also comprising Justices Surya Kant and Bela M. Trivedi, was hearing an appeal filed by Reliance Industries against a Bombay high court order which had held that a person who is barred from being appointed as an arbitrator cannot validly nominate another to act as an arbitrator.
The apex court had earlier sought the Centre's assistance on the issue.
