Shokz launches OpenRun Pro 2 running headphones with dual bone and air conduction drivers

Open-ear style headphones and earphones have been witnessing a surge over the last year, with even mainstream brands throwing their hats in the ring—case in point the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. Still, Shokz, which was first on the scene, remains one of the highest rated and most frequently recommended brands in the category, especially for runners and fitness enthusiasts.

Now, Shokz has launched the OpenRun Pro 2, an updated version of its flagship bone conduction model. Only, this time, it has fitted it with a dual-driver setup. The bone conduction driver, which is known to struggle with bass frequencies, now only handles the mids and highs. Meanwhile, bass is delegated to a new air conduction driver, which projects the sound into the ear canal over a small air gap.

By matching each driver with its particular strength, the OpenRun Pro 2 aims to deliver the best of both worlds, all in the service of superior sound. Shokz claims that its DualPitch technology (essentially a crossover circuit that splits the frequencies between the drivers) reduces the vibrations that occur at higher volumes with bone conduction alone.

Battery life is slightly improved, rated at 12 hours instead of 10, while a quick 5 minute charge now gives 2.5 hours of usage instead of 1.5 hours. This is in part thanks to the new USB-C charging port, which will be far more convenient than the proprietary magnetic charging port found in the original OpenRun Pro (which, incidentally, has not been discontinued and is available slightly discounted on Amazon).

Also new is support for Bluetooth 5.3, and a number of EQ options. Shokz claims to have slightly reduced the clamping force exerted by the band, although comfort had not been a common complaint anyway. In addition to four presets (Standard, Vocal, Bass Boost, and Treble Boost), there are also two user-customisable EQ profiles. Colour options, on the other hand, have been reduced to just two: black and a sporty, bright orange.

In pretty much all other aspects, the headphone remains the same. The IP55 rating protects it against sweat and splashing water, but not immersion. A dual microphone system helps cut down wind and ambient noise on calls. The OpenRun Pro 2 also comes in two sizes, Standard and Mini, that differ only in the lengths of the rear band, for heads of different shapes and sizes.

The OpenRun Pro 2 is launched at the same launch price: $180, and is now available on Amazon.
