TON Network Suffers Outage After Surge in Traffic From Newly Launched DOGS Memecoin

The Telegram Open Network (TON) encountered a network slowdown on August 28 due to a surge in traffic from the newly launched memecoin, rendering the network incapable of generating new blocks for over three hours.

According to a message posted on the TON community site Tonk Inu on August 28, the TON network has been down for a period of time, with the market buzz surrounding a newly released memecoin named DOGS being cited as the main culprit.

Tonscan, a tool used to monitor the TON network, indicates that no new blocks have been generated since the last TON transactions were permitted in block 45341899, which was over three hours ago.

When approached by Cointelegraph for comment on the network downtime, no one from TON was available to provide a statement.

DOGS Memecoin Causes Surge in Traffic

As reported by Tonk Inu, the new memecoin called DOGS caused an unusually high amount of network traffic, which led to the network slowdown.

The memecoin, known as DOGS, was introduced on the Telegram Open Network on August 27.

The token, which is already listed on major exchanges like Binance and OKX, saw $1.7 billion in trading volume within the first 10 hours of its debut, with a high market cap of $891 million.

According to statistics from CoinMarketCap, the memecoin price has dropped from its launch-day high of $0.0018 to its current level of approximately $0.0013.

TON Society Expresses Support for Durov with Memecoin Effort

In response to Telegram developer Pavel Durov's recent imprisonment in France, the TON Society officially changed its branding on August 26 to support Durov with the latest canine-themed memecoin on TON.

"We are updating Toncoin’s logo and profile pictures across TON Community channels to the global symbol of Digital Resistance — the Resistance Dog," said the TON Society.

The dog emblem was brought up in 2011 when Pavel Durov was told to remove the posts of liberal thinkers and dissidents from his platform.

“In response, Pavel posted a picture of his dog, refusing to silence anyone on his platform. Since then, this dog has become the mascot of free speech. It has become an emblem of hope, incredible strength, and courage.”

The TON Society also announced an "Open Letter Mini App" on the messaging platform and demanded that the French government release Durov from custody and "allow Telegram to protect the freedom of expression and right to private life for its users."
