Analysis: Is Tap-To-Earn Really Just Play-To-Earn 2.0?

Telegram Mini-Apps have been gaining popularity recently, especially among Filipinos. These mini-apps offer a variety of services, including games, and some of these games have been rewarding players with airdrops of cryptocurrency tokens.

One of the most popular Telegram Mini-Apps games is Notcoin, a clicker game where players collect virtual coins and compete with each other to earn the highest score. Other popular games include Hamster Kombat, Catizen, and Tap Tap Mining.

The airdrops from these games have been attracting a lot of attention, and some players have been earning up to ₱500 per day. This has led some people to wonder if these Telegram-based games are the new play-to-earn (P2E) games.

In a recent Facebook post, Luis Buenaventura, the current head of GCrypto and the former country manager of YGG Pilipinas, answered some questions about web3 gaming. When asked about his thoughts on the Telegram-based games, he said:

“Actually, the vibes are very familiar. If you remember last year 2021, everyone was talking about P2E games like Axie Infinity, Splinterlands, etc. This year 2023, everyone is talking about Telegram games. Both are free, easy to access, and attractive. Especially if you get paid for playing.”

Buenaventura also pointed out that the Telegram-based games are attracting a lot of attention from both traditional gamers and crypto enthusiasts, which is helping to drive up the prices of TON tokens.

“Both traditional gamers and crypto people are paying attention to Telegram games. This is also one of the reasons why the price of TON tokens is going up,” he said.

Zaky M, the BD for Asia at Blum, also shared his thoughts on the Telegram-based games in a recent interview with BitPinas. According to Zaky, tap-to-earn has proven to be an effective strategy for onboarding new users into Telegram Mini Apps.

“At Blum, we are building a decentralized exchange within Telegram Mini App (and beyond), specializing in trading memecoins and new tokens,” he said. “Our platform features a unique memepad for launching new meme-based projects, incorporating gamified mechanics to enhance user engagement and retention.”

Overall, it seems that both Buenaventura and Zaky M agree that the current hype on Telegram-based games has the same vibes as the 2021 hype on P2E games. These games are free, easy to access, and attractive, and they are also helping to onboard new users into the Telegram Mini-Apps ecosystem.
